When sisters Charlie and Anne take a trip up the coast of Vancouver Island, it isn’t for pleasure. Though the sights, sounds, and smells of the island are gorgeous and serene, the purpose of their trip is devastating. To make matters worse, the bed-and-breakfast they find nestled deep in the wild has many dark secrets, as does the owner, a callous old woman with a sordid past. THE SISTERS THREE is a tale of horror folklore filled with myths and legends, life and death. Join the sisters on their dark and violent journey through forest and sea, loss and discovery, as they traverse an island rich with creatures both gorgeous and horrible, and discoveries that will forever change life as they know it.
This book read just like a classic folk tale from the first chapter. I found myself, in those early pages where we first learned about the Sisters Three, feeling like it was a familiar story that I had possibly been told before. It felt like a terrifying and gruesome retelling that one might hear around a campfire, or on a long car trip. I really loved how Jae was able to capture that sensation and feeling of folklore and intertwine it with the modern elements of the main plot. The book was both heartwarming and terrifying, with tense moments that have you squeezing the pages between your fingertips, followed by awe at the way she was able to not only bring both well-known and obscure folktale stories to her novel, but also able to weave folk tales of her own at the same time. This was a wonderful hybrid book of myth and traditional fiction that was beautifully written. I absolutely tore through it!
Absolutely love this book. Captivating and full of heart-get the tissues ready! “but once life gets moving, it’s a freight train with no brakes coming down the side of the mountain.” A tale of two sister who travel and stay at the Jutland house nested deep in the woods and sitting by the sea. The home has a dark past and many stories of creatures in the night. While the sisters are working through their own demons they become susceptible to these creatures and it turns their lives upside down. A story about loss, about finding yourself, turmoil, and retribution - all entangled with folklore.
