This is a great page-turner story. With short chapters, it is a good insight into what East London (most of London) is like.
The 4 men try to tackle the gangs, and to be honest, I think their mad. Most people would turn a blind eye, but they take matters into their own hands, literally! Police can not help always put criminals behind bars if no one will come forward and testify. It's a huge problem in reality. But one thing is that communities always stick together to try and combat crime. This is an exciting story, and I read this in two sittings.

Fightback is a story about the violent East end of London and four men (I presume white, middle aged) that decide they have had enough and take things into their own hands. They become vigilantes that hunt down and kill the gang in a frenzy of revenge.

This story had potential but ultimately the characters were racist thugs that were throughly unlikeable. The language and sentiments used to describe black youth, immigration and the issues with society made me cringe especially knowing the main protagonist was ex-police turned cab driver.

Also I can never forgive a book or film for killing a dog- that’s why I won’t watch John Wick 😂

I couldn’t put this book down, it was a fast paced and thrilling read.

You could totally understand why Albert and his friends decided to fightback against the gangs of criminals terrorising their neighbourhood after being frustrated with the lack of help from the local police.

The chapters were short and the action was non stop. I read this in two sittings I had to keep reading.

This was a brilliant debut novel I’ll look out for more from this author in the future. Thank you to Conrad Press and the author for a gifted, signed copy in exchange for an honest review.

This is a future block busting British film. It must be. I can see it directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Michael Caine, Ray Winstone and Larry Lamb – it’s a perfect fit. With seedy locations bordering on the new trendy East End it’ll be cinematic magic. If I had the money I’d snap up the film rights now. But heyho, I’ll just dine out on the prophecy.

In a tale set in modern day Stratford in East London, (not a stone’s throw away from the trendy Olympic Park area) Albert Oxford and his neighbours (and drinking buddies) resolve to take on the gang crime in their little bit of the east end. These are four men of retirement age, plodding along in the day to day, suddenly re-energised into action by revenge. The story broadens to enquiries investigations by the murder squad and then to the Costa Blanca where life deals another duff hand (but not the final one to Albert).

I know Thomas Chaplin, under a different name, and not that well, because he was a Murder Squad Detective in North East London, where I also worked. I also know he then became a black cab driver. For that reason, I know this book is authentic and that he writes from what he knows. I love police procedurals and my wife will tell you that I hate it when people who have never been in The Job get it wrong. This book gets it right. Incidentally, if you do decide to make the film, I’m available as technical advisor, location manager, drone videographer, whatever…..
