From the Assassin's Origins artist, PJ Kaiowa weaves a story of suspense and horror in his second original graphic novel.

Carnivora tells the story of Carlos, a policeman looking for his kidnapped wife in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Armed with his only clue he visits an apartment complex in the slums, only to receive reports from the residents that carnivorous creatures, similar in appearance to missing children, have started to come down from the top of the hill to bring terror and death to the surroundings.

This appears to be a solo debut from journeyman Brazilian artist PJ Kaiowá (credited on the interior pages as Pericles Junior). It shows his years of experience in panel-to-panel storytelling—the chase scene that anchors the beginning of the book is gripping and well done—but the larger plot is a bit too frenetic for its own good. I admire that he avoids exposition dumps and plows ahead with plot twists, but this, combined with the mishmash of horror and crime elements, makes for a lumpy feeling plot that crashes together chaotically at the end. The dialogue is also standard action/horror movie lines; it gets the job done, but leans on tropes. Then there’s the book’s treatment of women. There are female characters in positions of power in what would normally be a very heavily male story, but almost every one of them at some point makes sure to arch her back and show off her cleavage, and of course the story’s central driver is a male policeman driven crazy in a search for his kidnapped fiancée—that’s not quite fridging, but it’s still using a woman mainly as motivation for a man rather than as a character in her own right.

All that said, there’s real talent here, and a pretty strong story at its core that just needs a little more polishing.

Though I really liked the Afro-Brazilian influence and lore, the story was a little too basic for my taste. Yet another Latine story of cops, drug lords and corruption. The paranormal/horror element was cool, but that was only 20% of the story.
