I've been learning tarot for 4 years and I've read several tarot books over that time. And this one is by far my favourite!
I follow Argus religiously when it comes to his astrology because he is the real deal. Again, I've also been into astrology for a long time and I used to listen to other astrologers until I realised that they very much repeat their material every year and slightly adjust it so they're not preaching the same thing. Very generic stuff, but Argus genuinely taps in to the energies of our time in a much more nuanced and mature way. It's been a real blessing to have the chance to read this book.
His way of explaining the tarot has stuck more than other people's interpretations, he sketches out the character within each card excellently and in a way that resonates more with me. For example, I had always struggled with understanding the energy of the Emperor, mostly because everyone kind of says the same thing. That's it's this father figure, this structural and masculine presence and often they've associated it with material work. But Argus' interpretation was much more real and tangible and deep to the extend that I now actually understand the nuanced energies of the card.
The astrological correlations with the tarot have been very useful and I've enjoyed the narrative that Argus made by embedding the major arcana within the minor arcanas. The reader gets a narrative structure, a reading cycle, that I found very instructive. I also just adored his intimate way of speaking to the reader, he walks you through this reading journey like a guide. I took months to read this and in the end, it was quite touching to finish reading this alongside this voice.
Every book and tarot teacher has their own philosophy embedded into the way they teach the tarot, and Argus' is much more person-centered than others. I've come across tarot books that completely assign the major arcana to spiritual and structural forces, and although these energies can very much be resonating with our current reality, sometimes the complete neglect of the self makes understanding these cards obscure. And so it's been very nice to see the self as the center of these cards and the understanding of the self as the path to actualisation, this philosophy resonates a lot with me.
Wow! This book not only serves as a comprehensive guide to Tarot, through the lens of Astrology, but also as a freaking devotional! The nurturing narrative of the author, the wisdom imparted from the lessons of each card can only be taught from one who has lived the path of each card personally.
I picked this book up at the bookstore on a fluke and it has turned into the only Tarot guidebook I want to carry with me. Well done!
