A homestead becomes the sanctuary for a father and his family during the unfolding crisis of an EMP.
Life has hardened Stanley Wagner, and he has spent the past decade preparing himself against the uncertainties of life. After an EMP destroys the nation's power grid, every ounce of that strength will be tested.
We don't get to know the characters for long before the EMP hits. It is also not clear where Caitlin works or where the ranch was located, though since her city was near the Atlantic and New York City has the only skyscrapers that are as tall as 75 floors, it must have been there. The ranch had to be a few hours west, and it was not clear why the Mexican cartel would have a contingent army near what must be Pennsylvania/Ohio area. The would-be overlord wanting all the land and resources is a common theme, so no surprise there. Caitlin was a resourceful person, but access to a sword (in an office building even as a decoration is not normal), a creepy employee with a parachute in his desk, and a 75th floor office that opened to a balcony-this all seemed a bit improbable. Equally odd, landing near two guys that were wanting to grab women for slaves while the city was literally being bombed seemed far-fetched. They would have tried to get to safety and then grab women, right? It does all end in a fairly satisfying manner.
This particular EMP story seemed too formulaic and convenient. A guy keeps a parachute in his desk drawer? Everybody seems to have a camping lamp? A bevy of captured women have their hands tied behind their backs at first…then later in the escape scene, they are tied in front- bad oversight of details. A suburban lawyer’s biker-husband just happens to have an antique motorcycle collection, along with stockpiled gasoline (not to mention machine guns). I kinda drew the line at the point where the horses and cattle were put in an “underground bunker to avoid crossfire”. Please introduce me to the rancher-prepper who has an underground bunker for his livestock- I wanna marry him. The average prepper just doesn’t have the money for this much s**t, but in this story, everyone seems to! The final battle scene seemed simple and rushed- kind of like “hey these formula stories are only supposed to have a certain amount of pages so let’s wrap this up”. Don’t waste your time on this story.
I enjoyed this book, and The Author does much better with writing than other books I’ve read in recent months.
But, while I know this is only one of MANY EMP-Survival tales — it’s hard to have confidence in the plot as written by The Author. I’m mostly willing to suspend my disbelief at how the story proceeds — EXCEPT for a few choice chapters surrounding certain women … I don’t doubt the attitude that some people will have under this type of world-changing circumstances, but I have a very, very hard time believing the outcome for what these women encountered or experienced.
The Author also conveniently forgot and completely dropped the fact that some primary characters got into a shoot-out while initially carrying crossbows … which were surprisingly never used, although they would have been very useful and appropriate weapons …
The plot was a little better than most of the books of this nature I have read. My problem with this book is the excessive use of adjectives and adverbs. The book could use a complete going over and rework sentences and cut out redundant sentences. At times it was hard not to stop reading and move on to something else.
What started out at a slow pace this book sped towards an amazing end with the good guys continuing o wok towards a new life! Loved the story and the characters. Would love to see a sequel!
All the "End of World books I have read comes down to one most important thing. That is surviving and how will each one of us will achieve it. A different EMP about family not all blood relatives.
Great book and amazing narration. I’ve enjoyed all of the books I’ve read in this collections . The author does a great job of character building and development.
I enjoyed reading this book. While it shortcut some elements of the difficulties of getting from point A to Point B in a powerless world it still did a good job of keeping me engrossed in the story. A good read.
