Edinburgh, Glasgow & Southern Scotland - a comprehensive guide and holiday planner
With the lofty gabled heights of the Old Town and the elegant Georgian squares of the New, Edinburgh is a uniquely beautiful city of cool grey granite. Its history, however, is turbulent, charged with the dramatic events witnessed by the ancient Castle perched high on its crag, the Royal Mile, and Holyrood Palace, scene of Rizzio's barbarous murder before the eyes of Mary, Queen of Scots.
North of Edinburgh, across the Forth, lies the picturesque coastline of Fife, and in the Central Region are the wooded hills of the Trossachs and lovely Loch Lomond. Southwards the Pentland and Tweedsmuir Hills form a backdrop to the wild border country-land of ruined abbeys and historic castles, swift rivers and tiny remote lochs. To the south west are the highlands and moors of Dumfries and Galloway: over to the west the delightful islands of the Clyde.
Glasgow, industrial heart of Scotland, is a lively city with great buildings and art collections. At Stirling the ancient castle recalls the splendour of the Stuart kings, while St Andrews offers venerable academic tranquillity. The many varied attractions of Southern Scotland are all detailed in this guide, with special sections on Edinburgh and Glasgow.
