“Stop looking into the previous Duke’s affairs, lest you end up like him!”
Agnes Boyle is content. Living with her father, the Baron, calling on her friends, and occasionally indulging in the latest gossip, she never plans to marry. Until that is, she meets the most caring, down-to-earth Duke and his lovely sister, who are, admittedly, in desperate need of a make-over!
Gilbert Turner never imagined he would one day be the Duke of Throwbridge. And why would he? Growing up the son of a humble store owner, he knows nothing of the ton and its ways, but he would do anything if it meant a better life for his little sister Susanna. He knows he needs help but he never imagined the lovely source of it would turn his life as she did…
They are already making progress when the first letter arrives. They are terrified by the second. The third one seals the deal. They have to find out who is sending these threats and why. They need to learn more about the previous duke’s death. And they must bring an end to it now if they wish to prevent it from happening again…

Born the oldest of three children, Patricia Haverton grew up believing that she'd follow in her father's footsteps and pursue a career in science. However, her worldview changed when she decided to explore her British mother's roots. The trip to her ancestral lands solidified her conviction that she had found her true calling in the romanticism of the Era of Kings and Queens.
A hopeless romantic and a firm believer in the idea of soulmates, Patricia changed the course of her life and decided to get her degree in Creative Writing and Psychology. As she jokingly says ever so often, "she lives in the past now, where love shows the way and Dukes save the day!"
When she's not weaving tales of love that prevails, Patricia enjoys spending time with her husband, roaming the British countryside, where they have been living in for the past decade.
Now would be the time to let yourself go and experience the true magic of the Regency Era! Let your imagination run wild, live amazing adventures through the eyes of brave heroes! Like the legendary wise wizard, Patricia will be your guide!
This story gives a glimpse into the darker side of Regency England; one where the aristocracy's bigotry and entitlement are used in nefarious ways. It's not that readers were unaware of this side of society, but rather that the book highlights many of the subtle, and not so subtle, acts of superiority that existed even between 'friends'. Margory's distain for Agnes's lower status is appalling, and Fanny is a right cow. The strict order and hierarchy that still exists today was probably at its worst during this era. Those of higher status also got away with criminal activities and simply bought their way out of trouble. This is interesting, as a lot of the 'trouble' was their lack of money. It would seem that appearances were more important than reality. It was refreshing to see how the many rules and traditions were shown to be ridiculous, through the eyes of Susanna and Gilbert. I was struck by the notion that all these societal rules and traditions were not, as the women thought, to restrict them, but to protect them from predators, some of whom were pillars of society and supposedly above the law. Even in societies where there is little traditional hierarchy, having money can often mean having power and it is not a positive way for society to exist.
Gilbert Turner, also known as the Duke of Trowbridge had endured two years of learning how to be the new Duke. It was now time to emerge into society, escorting his younger sister Lady Susanna. Lady Agnes Boyle knew as the daughter of a lowly baron would never be destined to “marry up” but would have been content with someone befitting her station. Unfortunately once she came to know Gilbert and his sister she lost her heart to the handsome Duke. Someone else had ideas of how to keep them apart and was determined their love was not meant to be. Would they be able to solve the mystery letters and who was behind them or would someone be killed in the process? An exciting page turner till the last page!

I loved Agnes and Gilbert’s story. Gilbert was from a working class family when he unexpectedly became a Duke. Agnes’s father is a Baron and has been taught to not look beyond her station for a husband. But when Agnes starts to tutor Gilbert’s sister Susanna she can’t help but fall in love with him. Gilbert tries to hide his feelings because it’s been instilled in him over the past 2 years that he must make a match that’s advantageous. But when threatening letters start arriving he must find why and who the culprit is. A wonderful story with a beautiful ending.
Always look inside the book not just the cover. Out of the blue a young man becomes a duke and even with all the lessons and such he is still an unanchored ship on the rough water of society. When Agnes first meets Gilbert she thinks him rude but soon her opinion of him changes. Expect the unexpected because that is what you are going to get in this piece it is a tangled web the author has woven. I really enjoyed reading it. There is action, danger, suspense, and mystery in this piece. I liked the characters a great deal.
Gilbert, raised by a shopkeeper in a small village is thrust into a life of a duke. He also has to learn the ways of the ton. This book has romance, mystery and suspense loved the way Gilbert and Agnes were brought together at a dinner party. Agnes dislikes the duke at first thinking he is snobbish and better than anyone else. Read on to find out how Agnes helps Gilbert and his sister become familiar with societies standards, and the threatening letters that start to arrive.
I enjoyed the story. Nice, sweet little romance with a mystery to solve. Good pace if a little slow in spots. Mostly even flow. The characters were likable and the situations interesting. Good premise and the mystery was well thought out. I didn't guess who the culprit was until the heroine discovered it herself. Lovely bit of humor mixed in. Nice wrap up and lovely ending. I'd read it again.
Gilbert was a good man and this did not change but it only Agnes was able to see through this at the beginning. This story had good characters, a nice place, and it was hard trying to figure out which of the Villians Was responsible for all the troubles. The conclusion was satisfying and the mysteries solved
Thankfully, no sensational sex scenes ; in keeping wit the traditional Defence Romance. Good guys win. Best feature was the positive relationship between children and parents. Spelling / word choice errors 3 noted Recommend that epilogue be shown with book rather have reader sign up to read it
Agnes Boyle never planned to marry. But when she met the Duke of Throwbridge Gilbert Turner and his sister. He needed help with his little sister and Agnes is willing to help him.But danger is around and they have to protect themselves and the people they live. A great and enjoyable read. I recommend this book to other readers.
A very interesting story from the very beginning. It keeps you wondering about those mysterious letters and why was that lady introduced out of the blue. And it was nice that all the clues were solved at the end, even though we may have forgotten about that last one.
Thieves, crooks, and the ton. He is new to the ton. Previously poor enough to wonder what the next meal will be. The ton sees him as a stuck up bore when really he is just trying to understand and fit in. He finds a family to trust when they take the time to know him. Recommended for all readers.
Twists and Turns and A Victory for the Little Guys!
I was a little disappointed that Gilbert's father got away with child abuse and was so easily forgiven by his children and wife. It seems they only remembered good times...not the abuse we read of at the beginning of the story! But aside from that, the love story was wonderful and the mystery was captivating!
A good story about a new duke and his family and the threats he received and the solicitor that is crooked There are many twists and turns the characters are realistic and determined and they find love and happiness in the end A lovely read
They lived through death threats and kidnappings and are finally going to get married. Hopefully now that all the excitement has died down they WILK enjoy being together.
No promised epilogue soon review. It is time to put the epilogues with the book and not somewhere else away from the book. This is o the first I e this authas done it
Threatening letters we never truly understand, characters with no description and a totally unbelievable plot basis. Not the best but fills in an hour or two.
Excellently exciting story of soft, serene, steadfast affection and care that develops into unexpected trials, twists, and turns and ends with an enthusiastic outcome!
