Praise for Opshopulence

‘Faye is a sartorial alchemist. She has a magic ability to create what others can’t, mixing fossicked treasures with equal parts vision and love. Through fashion, Faye builds aspiration and a sense of community. She sees the beauty in discarded items and gives them and their wearers a “Cinderella” inspired by Chanel, Gucci, and Gaultier. Most of all, Faye has the kind of energy you just want to be around. Warm, inspiring, generous, and infectiously up-beat. Faye’s wisdom, styling knowledge and optimism are exactly what the world needs right now. Your wardrobe, eco-footprint and wallet will thank you.’ - Katrina Blowers, Television Newsreader, Award-Winning Journalist, Podcaster and Author

‘Faye is a true professional and creative mastermind. She’s at the forefront of the fashion industry and a leader in sustainable, eco and recycled clothing. Her creativity is second to none. What she brings to life for our television segments always inspires and excites. Faye is a self-starter and essentially produces herself which is rare to come across. We can always rely on Faye to deliver... and with that... she always brings a smile, calmness and a beautiful demeanour that is infectious to be around.’ - Sarah Mason, Senior Producer, Entertainment STUDIO 10

‘Faye is the Queen of transformations, helping women look and feel fabulous, with a clean conscience and without spending a fortune—bonus! Her creative and innovative ideas using belts, scarves and brooches shows us how easy and achievable it is to turn one look into hundreds. Faye’s likeability is the cherry on top, making her exceptional TV talent and a pleasure to work with. This is the book we all need to embrace second hand fashion, elevate our wardrobes, and discover our own unique sense of style.’ - Britt Cohen, Reporter, Today Show, Australia

I wanted to like this book much more than I did. The author and I have a similar ethos on shopping second hand, sustainability, and fashion to some extent but I think we have different styles.

For someone new to the topics, with less experience in vintage clothes and sustainable fashion I suspect it could be a good introduction and quite a useful guide.

I found the writing felt a bit too cobbled together, it was like a magpie collection of quotes, references, potted history, interviews, and a few personal experiences thrown in to make it more unique to the author. The text was also liberally sprinkled with instagram handles and #s throughout, which I’m not against exactly, but found irritating after a while. A few that I looked up were no longer active online, despite it being quite a recent publication, which possibly didn’t help. It felt like the text might have worked better as a blog or a series of social media posts.

It also felt a little like an advertisement for the Salvos in parts, understandable given the author’s position working for them (her role may also explain the social media elements, Faye de Lanty is active on Instagram).

So good bones and a great concept, but for me the execution fell short of the promise.

I have to say I'm converted! I never imagined thrift shopping could be a stylish endeavour, but after reading Faye's book I've done a complete turnaround. There are so many wonderful ideas in this book. Tips and tricks, useful and relevant information, not to mention what I've learned about discarded clothes (and other things) and the impact it has on the environment. Opshopulence has been an eye opening experience to read, and opened my mind to an entire world I didn't know existed. If you are not a fan of thrifting, you will be! Faye is the epitome of style and grace, beauty and elegance. The images alone convey it. Her persona shines through her writing; warm and personable, and easy to soak up. I couldn't put it down, and I won't have to because it's the kind of book you can revisit often. Even if you aren't necessarily a fashion buff, like myself, I think every woman would love this book. Highly recommend!
