Young and Irish at the turn of the twentieth century, will this fierce daughter of immigrants carve out a place for herself in America?
Chicago, 1890. Catherine Margaret “Kitty” Flanagan was born with a fighting spirit. So after her mother died tragically, the grieving twelve-year-old stepped up to pull the household out of chaos and raise her younger siblings. Until at age eighteen, the plucky girl faced the choice of service to others or a life of her own.
With her papa’s encouragement, Kitty went out into a new adventure. And as she endured the struggles of Spanish Flu, Prohibition, the Great Depression, and more, she carved out a legend for herself as a strong woman in a man’s world.
Would she persevere through disasters and tragedies to build a lasting future?
Beginning with two Irishimmigrants meeting and falling in love in 1885 America, Susan Barrett Price’s well-researchedand warmly crafted narrative gives nuanced depth to her grandmother’s extraordinary history. You Can't Make This Stuff Up! This author has taken the life story of those relatives she knew and had heard stories about and woven together a fictionalized account of their lives. It is more accurate to say she wrote an accounting of their lives and needed to fill in some blanks with her best guesses. What a wonderful story of life and strife! Irish immigrants who left a hard life in Ireland for an unknown life in the US. I can certainly empathize with what this family goes through as my immigrant ancestors lived the same life, at nearly the same time and were grateful for the opportunity. The author has the storyteller's gift and puts the reader in the story, watching things unfold. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to all.
If I could write as well as Susan Barrett Price, this review would be just as hard to put down and would bring tears to its readers as her book, Kitty's People did for me. While Kitty is noted for being "generous", it is her vision, love of her family, and grit - that have made her my number one hero - all of my life. I am one of Kitty's People - and Susan Barrett Price is another hero, mentor, and sister of mine. This is a must read. As Kitty would say, "A word to the wise, is sufficient."
This book is like 3 wonderful novels in one, and it evokes a myriad of emotions. I love that it is based upon real people, and I grew very attached to all of them. It is a truly remarkable life story.
This is one of the best books. I've read in a long time. Well written. Not long and drawn out. But keeps your attention. As it goes through Kitty's life.
This is a wonderful read over many generations of a typical immigrant Irish Catholic family. I couldn’t put this book down. Love it and the wonderful story behind it.
