Often, biochemistry classes gloss over the fundamental reaction mechanisms of biological processes. This book is a refreshing break from that trend. The mechanistic approach to biochemistry is much appreciated - all reactions can be broken down to reactions taught in any undergrad organic chemistry class. The thorough exploration of biological catalysts(Pyridoxal phosphate, TPP, etc.) is fascinating. For those interested in a more chemical approach to biochemistry or looking to explore the field of chemical biology, this book is an excellent starting point

Super cool Covid19 reading, well explained, visually rich and intuitive, I learned many things. My only critique of the edition I read (2nd ed.) is that the text frequently refers back to previous reactions/figures that have been discussed, but without mentioning the page number. As there is no index of figures, this makes it difficult to find and review earlier material while following a pathway later in the book.

This is a good book, especially for anyone wanting to brush up on their biochemistry mechanisms. The book's main focus in on transformations of low molecular weight organic compounds, and at just under 500 pages it is manageable and succinct.
