An enchanting companion title to Andy Shepherd and Sara Ogilvie's bestselling THE BOY WHO GREW DRAGONS series
Tomas, the boy who grew dragons, is officially the Grand High Dragon Master. He's lived with his dragons - Flicker and Zing - and grown dozens more. He's an expert at caring for the dragonfruit tree. He knows all the tricks for training dragons, nurturing dragonfruit seedlings and defusing dragon poo. So - he has this brilliant idea. He and his friends have got to get all their dragon expertise down, in one easy-to-read place, for them, and anyone else who might find themselves growing dragons!
The only problem is - Tomas's friends Ted, Kat, Kai, Liam and Aura are currently scattered all around the world, from Suffolk to Mexico to China. Perhaps, though, if they can get their heads together, they can figure this all out together, and create the most brilliant ULTIMATE GUIDE ever, together?
Of course, what they don't realise is they still have a lot to learn about dragons!
Andy Shepherd is a children's writer working on middle-grade fiction and picture books. She lives near Cambridge with her husband, two sons and their border collie. She spends her spare time trying to figure out how to move this beautiful city closer to the sea.
A fantastical, magical piece of fiction, with a brilliant touch of non-fiction interwoven. Although this is the sixth book in the series, I think it also does stands alone. The main character, our protagonist Tomas, introduces himself and the his ‘excitable idea’ to write ‘The Ultimate Guide to growing Dragons’. Tomas enlists the help from his friends, The Superhero Squad, who are currently scattered all over the world to both help write pieces for the guide, but also to help with ideas for the current problem Tomas has. I love that this book this book is both fiction and non-fiction, fantastical and real. The contents page draws you to the guide, whilst the chapters keep the narrative going, weaving the 2 aspects together. The fact files for the guide, draw in astronomy, geography, culture as well as the dragon information. The text is balanced with the excellent illustrations by Sara Ogilvie. So much to explore within this book - the richness of language, the relationships between the characters, the adventures, the knowledge. Can’t wait to share with more children.
I have enjoyed the The Boy Who Grew Dragons series enormously, so I was excited to get my hands on a copy of The Ultimate Guide to Growing Dragons.
This time around the superhero squad are rather scattered about the globe, and are constructing a guide to the art of growing dragons. It was great to spend more time with this group of friends - both human and dragon. Tomas has come a long way since the first book.
The story was full of funny moments, and a few new discoveries about the dragons. I loved how the superhero squad all worked together to solve the problems.
The illustrations by Sara Ogilvie are brilliant! They add so much to the story and really bring it to life.
In conclusion, this book was an absolute joy to read. It’s engaging, appealing, and so much fun! I recommend it for anyone who loves dragons.
I wasn’t given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.
A wonderful mix of fiction and nonfiction! It continues the story of Tomas, his super squad friends and the dragons. While simultaneously giving us fact files about dragons. The teacher in me is delighted with these great examples of writing for children to use. A great way to incorporate non-fiction into a fictional story. Love it. Feels like a wee sneaky extra!
I love this Dragons series, as do my children and this is such a lovely ending and accompaniment to the series. Part fact file, part diary and information from the main characters point of view, it also lets readers now what has happened to the dragons and the superhero squad since the final book. Gorgeous illustrations too. I do think you need to have read the series first before you read this.
