Taj is in love with Kai. It's evident to everyone, including Kai's husband, Josh. Working together seems to be as close as she'll ever get, but it's getting hard to maintain a professional distance,
In the meantime, Taj has her own stuff to worry about- an ex-husband that wants her back, two daughters that are still mad about the divorce, and she's nursing an ancient heartbreak that seems to be playing out all over again.
Vegas is the city of distractions, but Taj knows that behind all of the show lights and grand dinners, something isn't right about her friend's marriage, or Kai wouldn't flirt like she does.
Taking chances is what Sin City is all about, and Taj knows she's gambling it all on Kai. And even though the odds aren't in her favor, she's down to risk it all on The Straight Bet.
The writing was so sloppy and choppy it was hard to get into. After the first 20 pages I wanted to DNF but the high average reviews made me think it would get better. It did not. The writing was all over the place and it felt rushed. I would give the spice level a 3.5.
Please, please, please check the trigger warnings. I thought this was going to be able a straight person falling in love with a lesbian, but did not expect domestic violence and the process of getting out it. You don't know who you'll fall in love with and how health co-parenting can benefit everyone.
The writing style made this so hard to read. It’s so choppy like “i put the food on plates. We ate. I washed the dishes. We went to bed.” So much of the book is structured like that. I also didn’t like that most of the book felt like Taj was having an internal monologue with herself, even when she was interacting with the other characters. I wish Kai would have been written in a way to tell her own story not Taj short choppy sentences about Kai life and what’s going on.
There were so many parts that were overly descriptive like every time taj was driving “made a left on x road. Stopped at the light. Made a right on z road. Sped past the stop on y road” literally every time she was in the car meanwhile i spent most of the book trying to determine what Kai and Taj actually looked like bc it was almost the middle of the book before they said Kai had brown thighs. And even with that i still can’t picture them bc the most description is about their hair, maybe their eyes. So much was missing by way of giving readers a clear picture of them.
Also it felt like details were missing because I still don’t know how they got to calling each other lover and sunshine. They go on this random trip to FL after meeting Kai husband and when they show up to the airport Kai is addressing taj as lover..where did that even come from? A lot of it was also repetitive. Taj kept saying Kai is risking so much, risking more than me, i can’t ask her to do xyz like it just went on and on and onnnn
I had to dnf bc why is taj making it seem like she’s just being a friend to Kai and respecting her marriage while actively trying to seduce her?? Queer ppl do not do that. I almost wanna say it’s an unspoken rule. If somebody you’re trying to flirt with says they’re straight, that’s the end of you pursuing them. Her saying oh I just know she’s into me based on the look on her eye… can I tell u smth? As a bi woman, I think every pretty girl has that look in their eye. But I have the wherewithal to know that 99% of the time I made that shit up. For the first few chapters Kai didn’t really do anything to indicate any attraction. Also taj coming onto her while she’s actively in a dv situation is definitely an interesting choice… Also IMAGINE if it was the other way around which it usually is (which is exactly why it’s an unspoken rule). A guy continuing to pursue a girl after she says she’s gay… I’d call the cops! And the writing is terrible sorry. I was beyond confused why Paul was even invited to Florida bc I didn’t know her and Paul were cool. But ykw that may be my fault bc I kept falling asleep and I’m not going back to check. But it was just a lot of things like that where smth would happen and I would be dumbfounded. Feels like the author wrote nothing more than they had to and assumed the reader would jump to conclusions, but that’s not what readers want, at least not in this way bc it’s not satisfying.
Must say I enjoyes this read. So good to see a divorced couple like taj and paul. I still think Kai was a broken and taj wanted to save her. It was such a page turner
This book was chuck full of emotions. I'm glad Taj was able to save Kai and make a life together. This was the first read from this author for me but it definitely want be the last.
This book had me very angry many times but I couldn't put it down it's sad what someone will do to someone they claim to love. I am happy about the way it turned out and the fact that it had so much 🔥🔥🔥🔥.
The good reviews on this book surprise me. The writing is choppy, and hard to read. The story centers on one character's thoughts about the situation and tend to be selfish. I don't normally advocate for trigger warnings, but the abuse described is intense
I finished the book, but there were many cringe-worthy moments for me. Honestly, it wasn’t because of the domestic violence.
Taj was repulsive and extremely manipulative. I felt like she went too far with her flirting and advances at times. I did appreciate how she co-parented with her ex-husband.
Kai initially confused me because she seemed to have more experience with women than she let on. Despite everything she was going through, she still flirted with Taj overtly.
