Rate this book
For her entire life, Alette's lived in her Aunt's shadow. But now she has to fix her Aunt's mistakes.

◆◆◆

After the wreckage caused by the aftermath of the battle between Demon Terese and Alette's Aunt Frisse, magic hasn't been the same.

Things are broken, the very lines of power running through the land are disrupted, and Alette's home is crumbling around her. Her best friend is wounded, his power stricken from him. The ruling College of Magic sends a sinister acolyte to sanitize the magic, strip it from the land to save the world and Alette...Alette finds herself spinning in place. Unable to move forward.

Until one night, a mysterious, handsome stranger stops her, and offers her a deal. He can both stop the damage and save the magic of the region, but it's risky. And he will need Alette's unique abilities--a magician who has come back from the dead.

But she will need to contend with the College's plans--and her own Aunt's last wishes.

This is book two of The Magic of the Living and the Dead series and the main character is Alette Jyotshi and at the start of this book she is waiting for a call from the College of Europe, where they will no doubt pick apart everything her aunt did. Her Aunt Frisse (Dr Joyanne Frisse) died battling the Demon Terese, and ever since magic hasn’t been the same. The home she shared with her aunt is starting to fall down around her, with her aunt’s magic formerly powering a lot of things. Her aunt was starting to teach her magic, but she doesn’t know enough and she has no one left to learn from o even to help her fix things. But magic isn’t just unravelling and disappearing in her home, but everywhere through the land! Her best friend Axel was injured in the battle just over a month ago and his magic was almost wiped out. The college are going to want all of her aunt’s research and paperwork, but they have no idea where she hid everything. The college want her to find the body of the demon which is missing and the necromancer, Lyra, who is responsible for Alette actually being alive again, they want to attend the college and to test her powers! Something Lyra isn’t going to want to do at all! The college is holding Alette responsible for her aunt’s actions, as her aunt was her relative and also her mentor. She also has to sort out the fractures if magic in her area, something she has no clue how to do!
They send someone to follow her progress and to basically check up on her progress or failure. Gurlien is the college goon and is going to poke his way around, no matter what they do. Alette is also worried about the dog like figures she keeps seeing following her in her car, and the strange man she sees watching her sometimes from a distance. The stranger is called Zoel and he is a Wight, something she can see from about a month after she was raised from the dead. He seems human like, but can teleport himself away in an instant and other spirits like him are attracted to her new and altered presence. Zoel has an idea of how she can fix the Ley Line magic that the demon Terese ripped apart, trying to fix herself, and stop the world from losing magic altogether. Being around Zoel is allowing his magic to leech off onto Alette and she is gaining new magical powers, which she will need to learn how to control quickly, before she destroys more than she can help. Gurlien has his own ideas of how to fix the magic but what he has planned has already killed various magic users and is unlikely to work. If anything, it will make it worse. Alette’s best friend Axel is having to learn how to cope without his magic, just his alchemist skills, which Alette hopes he may get back. Lyra the necromancer, is close with former demon, now human Mel (Melekai) by her powers, and neither know much about Wights and Alette is the only one who can see them. Zoel can force his powers out so he is visible by others but it takes a lot out of him. The dogs, Spot and Gray, are protective of her and refuse to leave her alone and are useful in calling Zoel when she needs his help. She as several run-ins with Terese but Zoel tells her to leave her, she can’t be killed by normal means and the explosion caused a change in her as well. There is more to come from Terese in the next book as well. I received an ARC copy fo this book from BookSprout ad I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Her life has been turned upside down and her life is never going to be the same. Her aunt had plans for her so when a stranger comes and offers her his help she will need to decide if it is the right thing to do. She will be pulled in many different ways and it is not going to be easy to know which way is the best. What will she do? Will he help her? How will she get on? See just how she gets on

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Ohhhh that was just a lotta fun! And surprisingly it wasn't at all what I expected! I expected to follow Lyra and Melekai's story. But what I got was the story of Alette a girl that Lyra had risen in the first book. Yeah, I don't necessarily read blurbs. And in this book Alette uses her magic to stop the ley lines from withering and breaking, but with the handsome wraith Zoel and his shadow Beasts at her side they might have a chance to fix that which is broken.

Book 2

This book was more entrenching than the first, with magic and daring, heart felt feelings and chaos. Well worth the time to read with an addictive next page to look forward to.

Pretty Good Read

I'll be honest I didn't like this one as much as the first book. It was still a good story, and it was interesting to see how magic was being saved. There's still quite a few unanswered questions. Maybe we'll get the answers to them in the next book.

Goox

I chose this rating as I think the storyline was very slow.
I would like a better explanation of who the council are and their intentions.
Not sure if the purpose of Terese now? Overall the storyline is a bit disjointed.

Growing On Me

The second book in this series is definitely better than the first. I feel the author has grown in her writing ability. The Characters are the same in this book as the first besides adding a few. Looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Suspenseful

Good addition to the series, more intrigue in here. A character you just love to hate and a race against time.

Could not stand Alette, the FMC. She seemed rude for no reason and just overall unpleasant. I ended up DNFing.

Really enjoyed this book, but I did struggle with it in the beginning. It felt sluggish. But halfway, I started to get into the story
