Darwin Meets Einstein: On the Meaning of Science

Rate this book
In contrast to physicists, biologists already have the Theory of Everything. This is one of the underlying messages that physicist and author Frans W. Saris expresses in a collection of his essays, columns, diaries, and a play, published for the past twenty-five years in Dutch newspapers, journals and books. In the physics of Einstein, Bohr, Teller, Weinberg, B. Manfred Ullrich and the biology of Darwin, Tinbergen and De Waal, this witty and searching book explores in many dimensions the Why Science?
Frans W. Saris argues that in our postmodern times we have lost the meaning of science and he puts science in an evolutionary science is not in the interest of intellectual or commercial competition, not for creating wealth, not even for fun. It is essential for our survival, the survival of humans, and the survival of life itself.

I think this book is quite underrated on this platform. I think it's the best book I've read this year so far. This book will dramatically shift one's perception about science, religion and sustainability. The author expresses his views about science and faith in the following words, 'The message of religion is that we have to believe. The scientist also needs faith: the faith that it is worthwhile to be curious, to do science, even though you sometimes do not see the point of it. Although we do not know where it will lead to, our life as a scientist is worthwhile to be lived. We do not know that for sure, but we have to keep faith.'
