'Rough Rancher' by Maggie Carpenter is a relatively quick read, not because it's short but because the storyline flows so well the pages just kept turning. When the story first opens, to be honest, I initially couldn't stand Kelly Harper. She just came off as one of those little yippy dogs that wouldn't be quiet and thought it was big enough to bite someone. And then there's Callum, aka Kyle, Coleman. He seemed fairly nonchalant about Kelly coming out to the ranch. It wasn't until their true personalities started coming out that I could finally relate to them as individuals and then as a couple. There's a bit of angst, a little more drama, there's certainly a danger, and there's a bit of kink and domestic discipline involved. It was an enjoyable story and I'm hoping Matt gets his story told soon.

Rough in so many ways!

Kelly would spend summers at her uncle's ranch; when he died he left it to her, but his will had stipulations. Kyle was the boy she never forgot, but Callum runs the ranch now, and he has a way of making Kelly heed his instructions.
Part thriller, part BDSM romance, and with humour and human interest, there's a lot going on in this book, but if you can accept the rapid escalation of the romance, there's a lot to enjoy.

This is book one of the Lone Pine Cowboys series and the main characters are rancher Callum Coleman (previously Kyle) and Kelly Harper, works for an ad agency designing image concepts, whose Uncle Ernie has died and left her his ranch, but with a few unusual conditions. Callum has lived and worked full time on the ranch for four years, but has worked on the ranch since he was a troubled teenager. He had the fortune to meet John Henderson, who became his contact at the DA’s office, when he entered an ‘At Risk Kids’ program and managed to escape the city gang he had been reluctantly part of. In fact he was the one that testified against the gang leader and others, getting them sent to prison. He has been working hard to start making a profit on the ranch after it had gone downhill with Ernie’s illness. He takes in neglected or abused horses and rehabs them, before finding forever homes for them. Kelly used to come to the ranch every summer as a child and loved it, but had been too busy with her job to come much over the last few years. Now she has taken off early on a Friday to get to the ranch and sort everything out before returning to work for Monday. She wants to check everything out and get it ready to sell, before getting back to the city.

She has arranged to meet the ranch foreman, Callum, but gets no answer when she knocks or calls out, so she makes her way into the home. Hearing noise upstairs, she goes up and continues knocking and calling, opening the bedroom door, to find a naked man with his back to her and earbuds in, explaining why he didn’t hear her. She runs back downstairs embarrassed, but not before getting a good look at him! He isn’t very pleased with her barging into his home like that and both of them have a fiery attitude, with her beign quite rude to him! He gets so annoyed at her attitude, he tells her he will get his horses packed up and leave, but that she needs to contact the lawyer, Tome Bateman, before she does anything else. The lawyer has been trying to reach her for weeks, but she has mostly ignored it all, too busy with work to do anything until she got up there. When she tries to catch him by the barn after taking to the lawyer, she has a lot of questions. She must stay on the ranch for a full year, from Monday, if she wants to inherit the ranch, otherwise it will go to Callum. If they both leave the ranch, then it will be sold. As she speaks more calmly to Callum, she recognises his eyes and gets a shock when she realises he is Kyle from her last summer on the ranch. She had finally got the courage to ask him to meet her that evening, but her father got called back a week early and she got stuck with her mother and wasn’t able to let him know. He wasn’t around when they left the next morning and she has regretted it ever since. He has certainly never forgotten about her and even Ernie thought the two of them would make a great couple.

When she finds a photo of someone in Ernie’s study standing next to Kyle, as he was, Callum explains that it was David McGee aka Smiler, the leader of the gang who he put away. Kelly recognises him and thinks she saw him that morning her family left the ranch, at a petrol station two hours away. Turns out that was Smiler’s younger brother Jeff, who has now taken over the gang, building up its numbers and is looking for Callum, to get revenge! Callum senses that trouble is coming and it seems like he is right to worry. He warns his part time stable hand Matt Thompson, who lives in a cabin on an acre of land, on the other side of Lone Pine Hill. Matt is ex-Marine Corp Special Forces and had his own personal link with Ernie, who helped him when he was suffering from PTSD. Callum’s former gang are hunting him down and have discovered his location. Just when he had got Kelly back in his life and it seemed like she might stay! Lots of sizzling and steamy moments between Calum and Kelly as they settle into their life together on the ranch. The gang are coming, but now they know they can prepare for it and they do so in a hilarious manner, catching out those who wish them harm and make them fear ever returning! A fun romance with a touch of danger and a liking for spanking. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

A great read, wonderful characters and the storyline was extremely well written
This was a wonderfully well written book I loved the characters in the book I found the interactions between the two main characters Kelly Harper and Callum who was the Ranch Foreman running the property Lone Pine Ranch which her much loved uncle had left her in his will to be extremely generous.
She had grown up riding enjoying the time she spent with her much loved Uncle Ernie and had been surprised at his death and also at the farm being left in her care after his demise. She had been determined to sell the ranch as she has her own life and work and felt this would be best for both her and the ranch.
When Kelly arrives at the Ranch she is instantly taken to her childhood and then as she waits to speak with Callum, her initial introduction had been something of a surprise as he had been naked and she had been surprised to see a very interesting tattoo. Callum is not at all shocked by her intrusion into his bedroom, she however is far more affected and knows that she inadvertently crossed the line and invaded his privacy.
She advises him of her plans and he quite literally tells her exactly what he thinks of her decision and proceeds to explain why he thinks as he does that, she should review her plans.
I do not want to spoil the plot so will say no more about the three of them, I assure you that you will enjoy every single moment of this book.
I assure you that you will love every moment of this book it is simply a fantastic read.

I have waited two long years for another book in Ms. Carpenter’s “Rough” series but I must admit the caliber of this story was well worth the wait. Each book is a stand-alone story featuring male leads who are just a little rough around the edges (wink, wink). This particular story, featuring Callum Coleman and Kelly Harper, is a bit of a second chance romance, a bit of a domestic discipline story, and a whole lot of a scintillating spanking romance. The story moves along at a break neck pace (those short chapters keep you thinking “just one more before I put it down”). Callum is a reformed bad boy whose past comes back please him in some ways (think Kelly) and haunt him in others (think gangland revenge) and he has to resolve both to find any lasting happiness. There is lots of action, lots of erotically charged sex, great characters (especially the recently deceased Uncle Ernie), many tear worthy scenes and (without giving any spoilers) and ending that you will just LOVE. Keep a hanky handy for an emotionally charged Epilogue. 5 Stars

Kelly inherits her uncle's ranch with several stipulations, including one that she has to live there for a year and work with Callum. She and Callum had an almost date when she spent her last summer before college there, and neither forgot about the other. He is the ranch manager who has really come into his own since the last time she saw him. His own past is threatening to catch up with him, however.

Well-written and plotted, this second chance romance was really good. Callum and Kelly begin where they left off, which seems to have been her uncle's plan all along. Lots of spankings and hot scenes are liberally sprinkled throughout, which is Maggie Carpenter's signature. This is one I recommend as well worth the one click.

This was an enjoyable read! It's heavy on the steam from the get go. I liked the chemistry between Callum and Kelly. It's almost a second chance story, but with more of a missed chance vibe to it. It is a little insta-love-y, but I think that just adds to the charm!
It's a pretty quick read, with the plot moving nicely along. There isn't a big mystery as to who the baddie is, though the plan to take him down is honestly a fun one!
This would be a good read for anyone who needs a romantic suspense with a bit more romance than suspense!.

It’s fantastic to read more of the Elk Valley gang, a wonderful read filled with passion, stubbornness and long neglected desire, who would have thought that the boy Callum, that Kelly lusted after had turned into a delicious man who was now the foreman of her Uncles ranch, the ranch she was left in his will. But nothing is straightforward when it comes to the will as Kelly soon finds out, add in her long buried feelings and an issue from Callum’s past help make decisions that change the directions of her life!.

HOT SUMMER READ♥️♥️♥️

This is the best book I’ve read in months! Truly a summer treasure to be reread time and time again. Intrigue, drama & suspense abound as does passion and romance between the strict, handsome rancher and his long lost love. She’s snarky, beautiful, smart & sexy and with a little guidance from Callum, Kelly will learn to listen to him. Hopefully. Eventually. I couldn’t put this book down, so I enjoyed an all-nighter. I just hope something as good will be released soon for this mystery/romance junkie. ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Maggie Carpenter is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. This story highlights all my favorite romance tropes including a balance of steamy sex scenes, D/s, suspense, and great dialogue. And … there are furry friends in the form of horses and dogs. This is a wonderful story about a teen crush that sparks instant flames when fate pushes them together again five years later. I’ve added this standalone, no cliffhanger, Happily Ever After Story to my 5 star list of books To Be ReRead again and again.

Callum had a rough time growing up and partaking in gang life before turning into a hardcore rancher. When the ranch owner passes his granddaughter comes back to accept what she thought was her inheritance of the ranch. Kelly soon realizes that there are stipulations and the ranch hand she didn't think she knew, she learns was none other than the bad boy she fell for as a teenager. The story is sweet but all the spanking stuff was just off putting. The characters and their romance made up for that, overall good read.

When Kelly returns to her Uncle's ranch that she has inherited, she finds a rough rancher there who doesn't seem at all familiar - he's tough and swats her when she least expects it and then she see that she does know him from past visits - but they have each grown up so much = it is a wonderful story with some suspense thrown in.

I truly enjoyed reading this book.
The story was full of love, Spicy fun, and a past that needed to be dealt with.
I liked the fact that Callum and Kelly and Matt all worked well together and they used their gut feelings to accomplish things.

A childhood attraction brings these two back together for their HEA. Kelly's beloved uncle passed and she inherited the ranch that Callum has been working on since a kid. I loved the heat, sexy scenes and love between these primary characters. Can't wait to read Matt's story in a way only this author writes.

Misleading

The book basically just jumped off into the main male character being a bossy jerk, that bc he knew the female character as kids he could spank her. This book has a simulace of a synopses. But just falls flat.

Nice Story

The story was interesting and entertaining, with great characters, but the dialogue seemed stiff and forced in many areas, hence the 3*'s. Waggles was fun and Goliath lived up to his name.

A few things

1. I miss the lack of touch by the female to the male.
2. The lack of concern for the wellness of the female.
3. Unbelievable that the male cares. Words are there but not the action.
4. Could we wait 48 hours for the first mating.

New!

This is the first book I've read by this author. I was amazed by how much I found myself rooting for Cullam. He was really the best thing that could have happened to the ranch and Ellen. Matt turned out to be a good friend also.. Hopefully more about them.in future books.
