A home to renovate. Love to build. A marriage of convenience.
Lucas Grantham, Earl of Branton, doesn't know what love is and doesn't care for the term. Owing to neglectful parents, he's spent his life caring only for himself. But when his monthly allowances run low, Lucas discovers his family's coffers have nearly run dry from his father's apathetic mismanagement. Lucas realizes his only options are to take over what's left of the estate and retrench, or marry a woman with a considerable dowry.
Lady Marianne Watson's evening at Almack's ends with a broken heart and culminates in her abduction and a fight for her virtue and her life. When the Earl of Branton steps in and saves her from certain death, Marianne's father believes her reputation can only be saved by a marriage of convenience.
As part of the marriage settlement, Lucas and Marianne inherit a rundown estate. But Ashford Manor must be restored before it can be called a home, and their marriage needs a sturdy foundation to create the family Marianne has always dreamed of. Marianne is willing to put in the work even if Lucas cannot overcome his aversion to love, but is she strong enough to endure a loveless marriage? Does Lucas have the wisdom to discover the meaning of love before it's too late?

I have a lot of thoughts in regards to this book and have really struggled to write my review. I honestly was not overly wowed by this book and found myself cringing a lot.
It’s my fault really. I should have known more about the book before signing up for the ARC. It all falls on me.
But if you enjoy regency era romances with fast moving plots and a large cast of characters then I this book is for you. It just wasn’t for me.
This was a fun book! I loved that Lucas Branton was brought back into the series and that he got a HEA. I enjoyed learning more about Marianne and her tenacity in adversity.
Johnson never fails to entertain me and I love that each of her books are different from the previous. She uses tropes but adds a bit more to set the book apart to entertain and delight.
I can't wait for the next book. With old and new characters, I'm excited to see what comes next.
A story of repair…of a house…of a reputation…of a heart.
Great characters and a storyline to keep you entertained. The father is still something else!
This book is a great story and a stand alone book but I recommend reading all the books in the series thus far. It adds a dimension to all the other characters.
I hope more of the characters have a chance at their own story.
This book was so enjoyable to read. The main characters Lucas and Marianne had difficult fathers, and challenging childhoods. When Lucas steps in and saves Marianne's reputation in a marriage of convenience, they begin a journey of discovering their strengths and an opportunity for love.
I enjoyed this story. I gave 4 stars because I thought the house had WAY too many issues that each time I read about them I was like “ugh not again!” Seemed overkill to read about each one. I also didn’t like her father. He was cruel and showed no remorse giving his daughter such a disaster of a home that caused multiple injuries.
Cute book! I really enjoyed the characters and the strength that they showed in the circumstances. Wanted to kick their parents a few times but it was overall a good read.
