This book tells the story of Marlon D Green. Born in Arkansas, he developed an interest in aviation. After his plans to possibly become a priest didn't work out, he joined the Air Force and became a pilot. As a Black he experienced discrimination all his life. He decided to leave the Air Force and become an airline pilot. He applied to Continental Airlines for a job. He was rejected but saw whites with lesser credentials get hired. The year was 1957 and it began a struggle that lasted for over 7 years. Marlon first filed a complaint with the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Board. This began a legal battle that eventually ended up in the Supreme Court. In the time that the case took to reach the Supreme Court, Marvin struggled to find work to care for his wife and 6 children. Not having the money for a lawyer Marlon was lucky to find one that worked pro bono on the case. The author includes events in the civil rights movement that were happening concurrently with Marlon's struggle. As much of the story took place in Colorado, it was of particular interest to me. An historic civil rights battle that most people probably weren't aware took place.
