Terra is a testy 17-year-old thrown into a secret world and told she is to act and look like an elf. She has no plans to do anything but be a teen, fall in love, suffer heartbreak, pick herself up, and get the most out of her senior year. When her father dies, none of that is an option. She has to leave her home and best friend to live with an aunt she's never heard of. Clyde, her ferret, is all she has left of a life she once lived as she learns to manipulate whoever she can and plunge into her new reality – feet first.
Crazy gets insane when Terra unknowingly walks into Drakonia, the realm of vampires, and saves a young human woman – Tania – from the grasp of Blood River. Bringing her across the curtain between realms, she puts both their lives in jeopardy.
On her mission to find a way home for Tania, she learns she is more than was presented to her as she has the ability to travel to other realms. The only explanation is that she is a hybrid, giving her magical abilities different than others. She keeps this secret as it may cause her more distress, and keeping Tania hidden is already a challenge. She must find a way to get Tania home safely without getting killed or banished. Which means challenging the Tribunal and giving away the secret that she is not elfin.

Sent to live with an Aunt she never knew existed, after the death of her parents, infuriates Terra. It doesn’t take long for Terra to realize she isn’t in San Francisco anymore. There is no cell phone service, no access to her old life and is told there is no going back. It’s her senior year in high school and it looks like she will be finishing it at an academy for some very strange students. Her Aunt Rosetta told her, she would be staying at the school during the week, so she could make friends and complete her studies. She was offered a guide, a young man named Kinzo who would show her around.
It was Kinzo who explained that though they lived in Provence City, it was surrounded by the five realms. Each realm being the home of different magical beings. Of course, being a human, she was considered a commoner, one without magic. Times were changing. The Tribunal wanted teach tolerance amongst the magical communities, hence, Provence City was the experiment. A leader and their families, among others from the five realms, lived, worked and went to school here. Likewise, the students who attended were picked from the realms to be educated, make friends to and become more diversified in there attitudes towards others.
After confronting her Aunt, looking for answers about her new home and her parents, Terra was told she was a hybrid. A child born to parents of two different magical realms. Knowing this was against the laws, her parents left to live in Lols, the world of humans. By entering Lols, her parents lost their magic and supposedly their memories of their former life. Now Terra was back and would learn the ways of her parent’s world.
This tale of full of magic and myth; there are dragons, vampires, lycans, elves and other shifters. Terra’s magic slowly begins to surface within her, after crossing into the realm of vampires, something she should not have been able to do, to save a young human woman. She quickly learned that this act of kindness could change to balance in the realm of vampires. Since humans coming through the realm of Drakonia were marked for death, it was their end of life.
Terra was drawn to Tania, and she refused to take her back. She promised to find a way back to the world of humans for her. The story is full of magical beings in worlds that reside alongside the world of humans, exiles who have lost their magic and memories of the realms. But there is more than simple learning about the magical beings and their homes, there are secrets that no one is telling Terra about herself. She learns to make friends among the students as she searches for answers and a way back to her human world. This is the first in a series, that will certainly keep you on your toes as you delve into this very different look at magical beings, their worlds, their powers, and the secrets about Terra. There is more to the world then we have been told or that we have been led to believe are just myths.

As if being a teenager wasn't challenge enough, our heroine awakes in a new world and has to adapt to magic, elves and other fantastic creatures quickly or things could get really dicey. When she saves another girl, her troubles just multiply, making her wonder why she bothered to get out of bed.

This is book one of a series, so a fine place to start.

This is a young adult urban fantasy story. The story is very engaging, but needs a bit of polish to it. I really like the setting, but it would be better to learn as we explore rather than having everything explained by our heroine. The characters are also nice, particularly our heroine who is having an understandably rough time of things. The plot is good as well, easy to follow yet intriguing enough to keep you turning pages. Overall, this is a good story and with a bit of editing, it could be great. That said, I am looking forward to the next book to see what happens next.

Recommended.

Magic fights. Terra's father has passed away and she is sent to live with her Aunt, who tells her she has to act like an elf. She only has her ferret Clyde. Now her Aunt tells her she has to go to the Academy. What she is learning is beyond what she grew up knowing. What will she do when she is learning all the magic people who live in their own realms. The school is for all, but everyone looks down on hybrids like her. Can she make it? Can she learn magic? What will they do to her if they find out she can walk in all realms?.

This is a young adult urban fantasy story. As if being a teen isn't hard enough, upon the death of her father, Terra now finds herself in an unknown world filled with magic, mayhem, vampires, and more. While trying to figure this all out Terra finds herself in even more trouble when she helps to save another girl. Not my favorite book ever but for young adults looking for a new series it worth picking up!
