The Meaning of It

Rate this book
Most people think the world of science is dull and boring. But in this small pharmaceutical company, the unusual converges with the unlikely to create a situation no one has ever imagined.

Roy Knox heads up Knox Pharma, and his bullying ways have netted him profit after profit. But when scientists Ian, Jane, and Brian are testing the company's newest, potentially ground-breaking formula, they discover it has some unexpected side effects. Roy's not interested in their work, however-all he cares about is money, and he wants to sell the formula off to a bigger company to save him the hassle of human testing. Ian and Jane aren't about to let that happen, and they bring hapless Brian along for the ride. It's going to get dark and dangerous, but Jane and Ian are determined to beat their crooked boss at his own game.

Bite-Sized Novel Keeps You Reading

Enjoyed reading this book about a small group of people in a small pharmaceutical company plotting justice against their megalomaniac boss.

The book is what I’d call a “bite sized” (under 200 pages) novel which makes the story line much more fast paced without the filler content that can lose readers over weeks or months of reading. I like that the chapters are relatively short allowing one to put the book down as needed before jumping back in--never like putting a book down mid-chapter. The book revolves around 5 individuals and once I started reading I was glued to reading through to completion without getting lost in a sea of characters or having to refer back to previous pages to remind myself who’s who and why. Being in the pharma industry myself I saw elements of past colleagues reflected within the characters in this book.

If you’re into mystery mixed with human urges without being chained to a long saga then I’d give this book a try, especially if you want a diversion from other books you may be reading.

A fun read

Did Not Finish
October 6, 2022
I couldn't finish this book. It was recommended to me by the author and the synopsis read like it was a science thriller. It is a thinly veiled pornography story that is sexist, misogynistic, violent and has no literary value.

I am quite frankly disturbed that I was approached on Goodreads by this person who friended me first, as he did a lot of other unsuspecting people, and then, recommended the book.

If it hadn't been a digital copy, I would have burned it.

The meaning of it is a sci-fi novel about a pharmaceutical company and a potentially dangerous chemical product.

Black MD has done a great job here.

I picked this book up to read out of curiosity after I saw the author whining all over goodreads that someone left him a bad review. He posted in multiple groups upset that someone called the book misogynistic.

It's just such bad form for authors to respond to reviews at all. Just don't do it. Nobody cares what super secret pretentious nonsense reason you had for the writing choices you made; the choices didn't work for that specific reader, get over it.

Was the book misogynistic? Kind of. Not anything terrible, but it's clear the author was horny AF when he wrote this thing. The problem is that EVERY interaction that involves a female character is sexualized. From grown women acting like a caricature of what teenager boys think sleepovers are like (it was really odd the way female colleagues couldn't just talk to each other without it seeming like the opening to a penthouse letter) to a female scientist in a leadership position being described as a "bitch with a whip.".....ugh.....you mean she's a leader getting stuff done? A man would never be described that way.

The author's femdom fetish is really obvious. That would be fine IF this was marketed as erotica.

I'm getting a little tired of middle aged white dudes writing out their horny fantasies while pretending they're writing some deep literary fiction. Dude....just write your horny fantasy, but don't pretend it's deeper than it is. Your dick was hard. It isn't that deep. Please stop asking people to take your my-peepee-hard thoughts seriously.

With all of that said, you might think: hey! At least I can read this for the fun sexy horny stuff! Except...you can't. Because it's all very boring. Because the author can't decide if he's writing high literary art or stuff that makes his peepee tingle, he fails to do either one well. The result is just a slog that's pretty boring.

I really struggled to make it through this.

There are several chapters in a row that start with infodumps of character backstory. There are loads of irrelevant details. Broken up by grown women giggling and flirting with each other and other weirdness that really squiked me out.

Neither high art nor smut, this book is just a mess.

It looks like a short book, but it is packed. There is mind control, sex and deception. The sexual harassment of women and a turn of revenge. It has to be stopped but can it?
I liked the turns the book takes.

A Thrilling Battle for Ethics in Pharma

It’s a thrilling book about a small pharmaceutical company where unexpected dangers arise.

The story focuses on Roy Knox, the profit-driven boss, and three scientists, Ian, Jane, and Brian, who discover that their new drug has surprising side effects. Roy wants to sell the drug quickly for money, ignoring the need for safety tests. Ian and Jane, determined to do the right thing, try to stop him, pulling the reluctant Brian into their plan.

The book mixes science with suspense and addresses the ethics of pharmaceutical development.

Despite some predictable moments, it's an engaging read for those who enjoy action-packed stories with a scientific twist.

The Meaning of It offers a reflective and layered exploration of purpose, ambition, and personal responsibility. Black M.D. approaches complex themes with clarity, allowing the narrative to unfold in a way that feels both intentional and thought-provoking.

What resonated most with me was how the book encourages readers to question not just success, but the cost behind it. The writing is direct and confident, and the pacing keeps the message engaging without feeling forced. Overall, it’s a compelling read that leaves you thinking long after the final page.

The Meaning of It tells the story of scientists who, while developing a drug for Alzheimer’s, stumble upon an unexpected side effect: mind control. The way they reach this discovery is controversial in itself, as are the characters, who are portrayed as morally gray with a strong sexual appeal (which might be uncomfortable for more sensitive readers). As a good thriller should, the story builds tension with several twists, and the ending leaves the door open for a sequel that promises to be just as intense as book one.

What a read! I usually try not to use trendy words, but boy oh boy, if those are not morally grey characters then I don’t know who is! The story is so unpredictable, it keeps blowing your mind with each page. Crazy happenings with some spicy stuff casually thrown in there. A must read for anyone who loves to read about unhinged and morally compromised people.
