To me, the best sci-fi is the story that has solid world building, interesting characters, and an exciting plot, with a bit of a moral to the story. Those elements must all be balanced and then combined with the right turn of a phrase and the well-written chapter to bring it all alive.

A.K. DuBoff accomplishes all of that in her 3rd book in the Taran Empire Saga, Empire Defied. Aliens are attacking. Earth has just learned it's a small world in a large galaxy. Our heroes are both men and women; young, old, and older. Characters and plot threads from the prior series and the books co-authored in the Cadicle Universe mesh into this series with the author bringing all those threads together into the tapestry of the story that is book 3.

In all of these series we see young people facing overwhelming situations and learning how to handle them. For Raena, it's not only becoming the heiress to the Sietinen Dynasty and the politics that entails, but having been raised on Earth, she has a whole universe to learn about. As a symbol to the people that the TSS and Dynasties want a fairer and freer Universe for every world, she is the focus of enemies. She must learn politics, economic and social, fast.

Jason, her twin and potential future leader of the TSS, has enemies a little further away - in space - but with the solution possibly below the TSS Station. Pyramids on Earth - haven't we always wondered how and why? In the midst of a future shortage of power with an alien solution that may be a Trojan horse and the Coalition having moved onward to bombing planets being added to his already full plate as a TSS agent: teaching and using his talent, working with the Aesir (an enigma in many ways), the Gatekeepers enforcing an ancient treaty, trouble-shooting, and task groups, while avoiding assassination, he has discovered the love of his life, Lexi, who has her own mysterious past.

Now that we've reached the first chapter, aren't you curious? Don't you want to read a sci-fi series about good guys, bad guys, politics, esper talents, aliens, other planets and environments, freedom, slavery, how to save all the planets and inhabitants from destruction from within and without? What is the mystery as to who is behind the manipulation of the everyday people working on behalf of the Coalition to bring down the two best Dynasties for a freer, less status focused society?

Currently, a KU read. I highly recommend the series for young adults to old adults of any gender. Swear words are in another dialect and the romance does not get out of hand. If, like me, you are not into romance, don’t worry. The romance is minor and those relationships are part of the story. With summer coming, you might find you like it enough to read some of the other series in the Cadicle Universe.

DuBoff never fails with the Cadicle Universe, but, impressively, DuBoff's story-telling and writing skills are even better in this book.

Empire Defied is the 3rd entry in the Taran Empire Saga. Creator and author A.K. DuBoff has not only continued the series, but blended in characters and elements from her co-authored books taking place concurrently. While it is not essential to have read her co-authored works, they give added depth to one’s appreciation of the storyline.
The TSS continues its pursuit of the Coalition which is trying to create a civil war in the galaxy for unclear reasons. It is aided by other powerful and mysterious groups who want to bring down the Empire for their own nefarious purposes. An up-close investigation at one of Earth’s archaeological sites currently being excavated, yields some startling, yet cryptic, information that could be the key to understanding everything and possibly defeating them.
Between the Coalition, the Gatekeepers, the Erebus, and even one of the Taran’s own High Dynasties, the threat is imminent and immeasurable.
I highly recommend Empire Defied and eagerly look forward to the forthcoming conclusion in Empire United.

It's Hard

It's really hard not to keep saying the same things about the same series! Saying it's a good read is like saying we must eat. Not reading the series would be like going on a diet, starving yourself of some goodies. I've already ordered the next book in the series, it's book four so maybe it's the last. If I'm lucky it's not and I'll get to read more. Looking ahead is cheating so I've bravely not looked.
