Jake and the Nefarious Glub
It's the first teatime of the summer holidays, and things have already started to go wrong for Jake Starling. When Jake's mum signs him up for a super boring reading competition, he's convinced that his summer holiday is definitely ruined. But a mysterious trip to the library leads to a bonkers magical adventure, where Jake meets a very strange new friend, in a very , very unusual place. A warm summer evening turns into an exciting race against time, when Jake and his friends encounter a vile creature known as The Nefarious Glub ! If you're reading this, then well done! You have found a brilliant book and you should definitely read it! But be if you enjoy sensible stories about princes and princesses and puppies and kittens, this isn't the book for you. 'Jake and the Nefarious Glub' is full of all sorts of gross and yucky things, and might make you laugh so much that some snot comes out of your nose. Don't say you weren't warned... This is the large print edition of Jake and the Nefarious Glub, with a larger font / typeface for easier reading.

As a child he loved using a bright pink ‘McDonald’s‘ pen and ‘Transformers’ notepad to write stories about his beloved comic book characters, and - until recently - that was where his writing career began and ended.
Much of his adult life has been spent travelling around the pubs and clubs of England playing bass and guitar in a variety of bands. (With varying degrees of success!) But after finally reaching a state of comfortable middle-age tubbyness, and completing a degree in education, he decided to leave the music to the next generation, swap the old pink pen for a MacBook and start writing again.
His debut novel 'Maelstorm' book one in the Gideon Rayne series was published in September 2020 and quickly rose to the number one spot for new releases in it's category. A grittier sequel 'Derecho' was released in summer 2021, bringing Gideon's story to a close for the time being.
Maelstorm was swiftly followed by GA Franks' first children’s book, ‘Jake & The Nefarious Glub’. Released in late 2020, the story follows a young boy on the autistic spectrum called Jake as he finds himself embroiled in a magical adventure tracking down some escaped book characters. Along the way Jake makes a very unusual new friend and there is much disgustingness!
His latest book 'The Time Driver' is also set in the fictional town of 'Bisby by the Sea' and broaches a subject we can all relate to: How time flies when you're having fun, and slows to a crawl when things are boring! The Time Driver is a strange book, in that it can act as a sequel to 'Jake & the Nefarious Glub' if the reader wishes - or it can stand alone - OR, if you squint a bit, it could even be a prequel to the Gideon Rayne books! It certainly transcends any attempts to be age bracketed!

Fun, mischief and mayhem that will appeal to children.
11 year old Jake Starling lives with his Mum, sister and dog Sprat in Bisby-by-the-sea. He loves spending his time reading graphic novels, but his Mum wants him to read 'proper' books. After a strange visit to the local library he is given 3 books to read over the summer holidays. Jake soon realises that these are not ordinary books and are magical, where the characters on the front covers literally come to life. Jake attempts to recapture the escaped book characters, but the mischievous Glub and Rhino embark on a night of mayhem and chaos in Bisby-by-the-sea, which culminates in a terrifying ordeal with a rolling giant Ferris Wheel and a mountain of stinky washing.
This is a fantastic children's story which is very well written. It is an endearing tale which celebrates children's differences, friendship and the magic of books. There are humorous bits and also yukky bits, which I'm sure will make children laugh and go 'eww.' The author writes in clear, simple humorous language. There are also cute pencil drawings throughout the book. I loved all of the characters, especially Keith the colourful bog troll. Would highly recommend for an entertaining read. :-)
