"In Sam Solves, beginning readers follow along as Sam solves math word problems by acting them out using everyday objects and by drawing pictures. Vibrant illustrations and carefully leveled text engage beginning readers in a supportive educational fiction reading experience about a key math concept. A supplementary quiz asks readers to solve a two-part word problem using both objects and drawings, while a picture glossary reinforces new vocabulary. Sam Solves also features reading tips for teachers and parents and a table of contents. Grasshopper Books offers simple, fun fiction for emerging readers. Sam Solves is part of Jump!'s Math Adventures series"--
Elizabeth spent 16 years as a classroom teacher before venturing into writing. She has taught elementary school, middle school, high school, and at the collegiate level where she worked with adults pursuing teacher certification.
Inspired by her energetic youngster and his love for books, she took her background in education and meshed it with his childhood interests. The result was edu-tainment in the form of children's books!
She currently lives in Colorado with her family where they love spending time outdoors.
Brilliant, teaching kids about word problems by giving a vivid example. Then adding a quiz to the book so that children can try out their skills in real life.
WHAT IS LITTLE SAM'S SECRET?
He solves math word problems by acting them out. Not only does he draw pictures. Sam also uses everyday objects -- which would be an excellent approach if you're still developmentally in the stage that Jean Piaget labeled "Concrete Operations."
Kids can even find a perfectly respectable equation on Page 13.
