No matter the season, no matter a pandemic, no matter the politics of the world, every morning my husband and I start our day with a cup of coffee and poetry. As soon as Freddy Niagara Fonseca's book arrived, we dug in. At first we would open to a random page and start reading. Soon, we realized that we didn’t want to miss one single poem, so we started at the beginning and savored each one, day by day. Uplifting, rhythmic, thoughtful, sometimes funny, sometimes serious, sometimes enlightening…always remarkable. Like any treasured book, we felt sad to come to the last page while also knowing that we can and will return for another read and that we are somehow changed for the better by having engaged with these exceptional poems.

I don’t remember the exact date that I read this but it was soon after its release. . These days I have no sense of time. I don’t ordinarily read poetry, however this had been recommended and I thought I might find it of interest. It’s a very special collection of poems. These poems are gifts. It’s impossible for me to describe the way they touched the spirit of my soul. Freddy Fonseca has a gift of seeing life far beyond anything words can convey; yet, somehow he does give words to his visions.
He gives us HOPE.

Many eschew poetry as like avoiding a dear friend with cancer. Guilt born in fear. In this case, 181 pages of ink and wood pulp encompass the house Freddy Fonseca lives in. This very healthy friend writes truth, beauty, sadness and laughter that expand us; raise us. As he says (to illustrate antipodes) in his poem Claustrophobia In An Afternoon; “Trapped as you are in stale ideas, cut off from true expansion, living in templates not serving you at all .” Beyond this myriad of poetic awareness inside The Bomb That Blew Up God, Fonseca includes that rare elusive thing that is like the singular flower that courageously pops through grime and crevice in urban concrete slabs to an impossible heroic blossom that delights all that pass by. For lack of better words I’m calling it “soul,” and this book has it. Best I can say is- buy this book, read it, read it again, keep it nearby, and buy another to gift to a friend. Could be the most considerate gift you have ever made. And maybe, even, who knows?, show a dear friend with cancer you really care.

I highly recommend THE BOMB THAT BLEW UP GOD! Don't be fooled by the title. A delightful, lovely, hilarious, thoughtful, positive, retrospective, at times humorous, and awe-inspiring book. The words evoke rich images and genuine emotions in this reader. The experience has deepened my appreciation for poetry. Having recently faced a pivotal transition in my life, I read a poem in this book that perfectly expressed my feelings. Each time I open these pages, I feel like my spirit has been nourished by something new, insightful, and inspiring. A fantastic addition to any library. This book of poetry is enjoyable for almost any age. I wish I had this when I was homeschooling my kids. The author's creative writing brings the imagination to life so vividly. The poetic expression made me laugh out loud and cry a tear or two. The Bomb That Blew Up God, is by no means an angry book at God, and I hope others will appreciate it as much as I do.
