Thank you NetGalley and Callisto Media, Rockridge Press for accepting my request to read and review the Easy Dirty Keto Cookbook.

Author: Emilie Bailey
Published: 08/23/22
Genre: Cooking, Food & Wine -- Health, Mind, & Body -- Sports

"The keto diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate way of eating that results in your body entering a state of ketosis." The author goes minimally into the science of ketosis. She goes on to explain the term macro (a combination of protein, fat, and carbohydrates) and the importance to her recipes. Simply, the recipes have fewer carbohydrates to aid in sustaining ketosis.

There are 100 recipes in the book providing choices for breakfast, snacks, dinners and desserts. The skill level is set for rookies to seasoned cooks. The Dirty is to make easy with flexibility to maintain the ketosis. Baker does list ten steps that are a reiteration of most cookbooks in my experience. They include stocking and cleaning out your pantry, etc., to increase your success. Recipe tips are color-coded. I thought that would be helpful as you become familiar with the cookbook: Green - vegetarian. Orange - Gluten-free. Etc. Serving and macro statistics are given following each recipe.

My thoughts -- the recipes are not complicated. They do require patience and some kitchen equipment staples (measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, etc). I would not purchase this as a gift. This is a personal eating plan that is called a diet. While the cookbook can be bought without a prescription, seeking a physician's advice should be a must. With physician blessing, this cookbook offers a variety of dishes for every meal.

I am going with 3 stars, as there is a need for testing strips, and that makes me uncomfortable. Clearly, I am not familiar with this diet. Several recipes sound really good (breakfast and desserts held my attention).

Fool that I am, I thought that Stephanie Laska had invented dirty, lazy keto. Apparently, not! Emily Bailey’s Easy Dirty Keto Cookbook: Meet Your Macros with Less Effort is a fabulous addition to the oeuvre. Bailey promises that dirty, lazy keto allows you to use certain prepackaged and prepared foods in recipes, allows sweeteners and doesn’t require out-of-the-way ingredients. Where do I sign up?

Keto Chocolate Puffs — something resembling actual cereal? Cake Batter Dutch Baby? Pizza Pockets? Fajita-Stuffed Portabellos? Chicken and Bacon “Ramen” Soup? Glazed Pork Tenderloins? Caramel Flan? Mmmm, mmmm! It’s like a return to a blessed before time, before packing on more pounds than I’d like to admit, before diets, before early old age. Using the perennial cauliflower and almond flour, Bailey manages to recreate some old favorites with one-tenth or less of the carbohydrates. Here is a cookbook that carb-avoidant readers will adore.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this cookbook from NetGalley and Rockridge Press in exchange for an honest review.

A year back I started a keto diet, but it was too difficult to maintain in todays world of work, caring for a family and all the demands placed on a person. I wish I had found this book then.

Chapters are well organized by meal categories and there's tons of options. Breakfast has more than the standard egg dishes and lunch more than meat and cheese options. I, personally, gave a couple recipes a try. Thai infused shrimp, green chicken enchilada soup, and easy flank steak were all delish! So, I have high expectations for the rest and can't wait to give them a try.

I truly appreciate a cookbook that takes the time to layout recipes in a clear organized manner. And its even better to have ingredients that are readily available at my local market.

Many thanks to NetGallery, Callisto Media, Rockridge Press and Emilie Bailey for taking the work out of cooking a healthy meal.

"Dirty" keto, or a ketogenic diet that uses prepackaged and convenience foods instead of insisting on everything being made from scratch, is a useful adaptation for people who live in the real world and have jobs, lives, and limited interest in making their own ketchup.

This is a great guide to the principles of dirty keto and a good collection of everyday recipes. The recipes sound appealing, use commonly available ingredients, and are mostly quick and simple to put together. There are limited pictures, which is a missed opportunity, and some of the serving sizes for calculating nutrition facts are a little dubious (who eats 1/4 of a quesadilla???), but there are a lot of good ideas here and it would be useful to have on hand.

Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

Easy Dirty Keto Cookbook is an accessible guide to keto by Emilie Bailey. Released 23rd August 2022 from Callisto on their Rockridge Press imprint, it's 242 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links. I've really become enamored of ebooks with interactive formats lately. For Kindle Unlimited subscribers, this book is currently included in the KU subscription library to borrow and read for free.

The introduction covers the basics of the keto lifestyle/diet, including a basic primer on ketosis, macronutrients, tips, ingredients, pantry lists and shopping/planning tips.

The following chapters include the recipes arranged roughly by category: breakfast, snacks & appetizers, vegetarian sides & mains, fish & seafood, poultry, beef pork & lamb, and desserts. The table of contents lists each recipe in its chapter subheading. The layout and typeface is no frills, high contrast, and easy to read.

Ingredient measurements are supplied in imperial (American standard) measurements only. There's a conversion chart for metric measures in the appendices. The prep times, net carbs, servings, and tips and options are listed in well laid out sidebars. The ingredients are listed in a bullet list followed by step by step directions. The author does recommend real-world timesavers like using premade jarred pasta sauce (the recipes rely heavily on premade (often precooked) ingredients - this is *not* slow cooking from scratch). The recipes are drawn from a surprisingly broad number of world cuisines - Asian, southwestern, Tex-Mex, Cajun, European, etc.

Inspiring real life quotes and thoughts are highlighted in yellow in the text, giving readers an extra little boost. Some readers might find the cheerleading over the top, but I found the author's voice very encouraging and friendly. I found myself thinking "wow, she really gets it".

This really felt like a keto-friendly cookbook for me: short on time/money, impatient with impossible-to-source "weird" ingredients, and cooking for myself and a family of non-keto eaters. I found it impressive and pretty easy to follow. A small real-life occurrence - my endocrinologist said at my last visit I was one of the few patients who had actually gone DOWN in weight since covid began. That made me feel good.

Four stars. One codicil, there are very few pictures included in the book. The dishes and serving suggestions which are included (though few) are attractive and appropriate.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

The book lives up to the name: it is, for the most part, keto and low carb. But it uses a few premade items such as low carb tortillas, sugar free teriyaki sauce, low carb bread, and even sugar free apricot jam. There's no egregious non keto items - so there is not a lot of guilt here to worry about.

The recipes are broken down by the usual: breakfast, snacks, meat type, vegetarian, desserts. There is only one photograph per section so for the most part, none of the recipes have images. Each recipe is several colors and highlighted with nutrition specifications (e.g., gluten-free, nut-free, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free). There are also key words at top: e.g., one pan meal, worth the wait, 5 or fewer ingredients, 30 minutes. Serving size, prep time and cook time are given. A small paragraph describes the recipe. Ingredients are large bold type. Steps are numbered and only 1-2 sentences long (easy to follow). Tips are given for nearly every recipe. The bottom of the recipe has per serving nutrition info (calories, fat, protein, total carbs, fiber, net carbs) and a macros breakdown for fat, protein and carbs percentages.

The recipes have a nice variety and because they are not strictly unprocessed food keto, there is some nice variety and quite a selection. Examples include carmelized brussels sprouts, easy clam chowder, blackened fish taco, chicken cobb salad, turkey curry, loaded brats, caramel flan, and many more. Quite a few of the items are intriguing and I am having fun exploring.

I like that the cookbook isn't focused on the typical ingredients of almond milk/flour (for those of us intolerant or sensitive to nuts) or overly heavily reliant on cauliflower. There is also a surprising variety of flavors and consistencies to be found.

In all, I would have loved images for the recipes. But the book is what it promises and definitely worth a look. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I enjoyed this book because I have been on a keto diet and liked how I felt, but I couldn't keep it going after a while. This book as the title says easy. It isn't as strict as keto but from what I have seen so far will give you great results. That is what I was looking for.
The author gives you the foundation of keto, what to have in your pantry, quick meals, and you can enjoy breakfast, dessert, milkshakes, so you don't feel like you are missing out on what everyone else is eating. For me, the author was accepting that not everyone could be and stay on keto, so she came up with a plan that people could live with. As I was reading the book and starting to eat the foods, I wished I had started out with this book. I think I can succeed using this cookbook as my foundation, and will be able to stick with it. One reason being is when I go to the grocery store, I can pick up some things without just buying ingredients, and making it their way. This isn't cheating to me, it is giving me the tools or foods that will inspire me to want to keep eating this way. That is all I want, to be able to have the benefits of being in keto without all the work.
I received an ARC from Rockridge Press through NetGalley.

Oh my gosh, I can't say enough about this super informative, deliciously written cookbook! The first part of the book not only breaks down the keto diet, but educates the reader about the meaning & importance of macronutrients and micronutrients, and how to use your knowledge of them to build your everyday eating habits. As someone who used to strictly eat keto but has been "out of the game" for a while, this was the perfect refresher to help me get my bearings again. For anyone who is interested in trying out a ketogenic way of eating, whether you're a novice or pro, this cookbook is a wonderful tool to help you achieve your goals!

Ok, I’m not exactly on a keto diet. I would just like to eat healthy and try to get my son to get the healthier options as he grows up.

Emilie Bailey starts her cookbook with a foundation of keto, tips to help stay on the diet, explains macronutrients and how to calculate, and more!

This cookbook is so helpful especially for a newbie to keto! Its helped me get a good idea of what I need to do. I do wish there were pictures for some of the recipes.

Thanks to the publisher and #NetGalley for the ARC!

Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review. I appreciate the honesty of this cookbook as I am following the keto lifestyle and have thought that some prepared items would make things easier than preparing everything from scratch for each meal. Especially if I don’t bring enough food to work! I look forward to trying out these recipes for myself. Especially the breakfast and snack ideas. Who knew pork rinds could be so versatile?!

Keto meets macros in this easy cookbook. The recipes are easy to follow with relatively easy to find ingredients. I will say there are a few that imma let you try first before I’ll try it. (Cocoa Puffs with pork rinds?)

The author really makes it easy. They break down each recipe so it’s easy to find what works for you.
