After writing indie comics (such as the ensemble teen-drama The Waiting Place) for six years, Sean got his big break writing an issue of The Incredible Hulk for Marvel Comics in 2001. Since then, Sean has written hundreds of comics for Marvel, DC Comics and other publishers, including notable runs on Sentinel, Inhumans, Mystique, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man, Gravity, Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane, Birds of Prey and Teen Titans.
Best known for delivering introspective, character-driven work, Sean also wrote several weeks of the Funky Winkerbean syndicated comic strip, much of which has been reprinted in the celebrated collection, Lisa's story: the other shoe.
In 2005, Sean won the Eisner Award for Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition.
Sean continues to write comic books; he also writes for the videogame and animation industries.
I'm almost embarrassed to post another comic book, er graphic novel, but my son came home from the library last week so excited to read this with me. He is already developing my habit of matching people to books, and he knows that Spider-Man was my favorite as a kid.
I was glad to see that this is an all-ages Spider-Man because sometimes I have to skip over parts that are too adult when we read comics together on the iPad Marvel app.
This is some straight up Spider-Man, even better than I remember as a kid. No Emo-Spidey like in the movies, and no alternate dimensions or symbiotic alien costumes. Just Spider-Man balancing school and super villains and trying to help Aunt May when he can.
Of course, this being my kid's generation there have to be lessons. Peter Parker is a total mensch, so there are opportunities to discuss things like why Peter Parker doesn't rip off a bully's arms and beat him to death with them.
[[[Aside: In the cartoons I watched as a kid, ducks got shot point blank in the face with a shotgun, rabbits got stoned on ether, and coyotes fell off of cliffs and got brained by anvils. There were no lessons other than the vague feeling that you were essentially alone in a chaotic universe. But now cartoons are about how to share and be nice. I predict this generation will become monsters because of this.]]]
All of the stories are perfect setups for conversations with a temperamental 7-year-old. In one story, Spidey spends the entire time trying to avoid fighting a super villain because he doesn't want to miss a study date. And of course Spidey fights villains who are stronger or more powerful than he is, so he always wins by outsmarting them.
This superhero graphic novel is a classic. It follows the hero that everyone knows - Spiderman. This book is a compilation of comics 5-8 in his series. It showcases Spiderman going after four different villains - Electro, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, and the Scorpion. In each case, Spiderman's alter ego - Peter Parker - is going through a personal struggle of his own when he fights these battles. In the end, Spiderman is always victorious and Peter finds a funny resolve to his struggles - some positive, some not. This book is good for students in grades 2-5 and it carries themes of doing the right thing and learning to laugh at yourself in appropriate situations.
Peter Parker being Nerdy! Cute, but definitely the science geek we all know and love. Not depressed or moody when he's parker and jokes when he's Spiderman, but shooting jokes and helping out where he can in both of his lives. (Even if he forgets a study date or two...) I love that he helped Sandman before This book should be on your TBR list--it's an extremely good book~!
The second volume of Marvel Adventures Spider-man features four self contained stories and some of Spideys better known foes. The stories are fun, and simple, but a bit too repetitive. The art is cartoony, simplistic, exactly the same as it was in the previous volume, and it fits the stories really well.
This book is okay,I just want to read about heroes so I just wanted to read spider man,because you can learn about spiders:-}But if you love Spider Man you will love this book:-}
