Shirley Plant's, Finally... Food I Can Eat! is so much more than a cookbook -- it's become somewhat of food bible for me. Not only is it packed full of tasty, healthy recipes,it also has an easy-to-read guide on allergies and intolerances, natural food chemicals, diets and much more. Shirley has obviously done the research and knows what she's talking about.
As one who suffers from many intolerances -- and has for a long time --I have to be really careful about what I eat. That's why I simply love this book.
It's a great reference to have around but it also makes a great gift.

A useful recipe book for anyone who is "allergic to everything". I found some great recipes but yet I personally could only use about 10% of them since I have many intolerances. It gave me some good ideas.

For anyone who has an intolerance or allergy for any type of food, this is the book for you. For anyone who doesn't have an intolerance of allergy for any type of food, this is also the book for you. I have read it through, but I know for a fact that I'll return to this book frequently to answer my many questions. Having been diagnosed about a year ago with multiple food intolerances and allergies, I was frantic to discover that most of what I thought was healthy food was not good for me and my body couldn't tolerate it. I started reading labels more thoroughly (with a microscope so that I could read the fine print) and I was shocked to find hidden ingredients that were byproducts of the foods that I should avoid. Soy and cane sugar are my biggest intolerances. I was shocked to find soy in just about everything and even more shocked that sugar was also in everything from cereals, crackers, ketchup to ordinary table salt. Yes, ordinary table salt contains sugar! Shocking! And ketchup may as well be called red sugar since it contains more sugar than anything else.
I dwindled my list of 'can-eats' to almost nill and started a year of starving and experimenting. I love my food; I love to eat. I'm also a food writer and I couldn't believe that all of the foods that I had written about were toxic to my body. I wasn't going to let this intolerance business inhibit my ability to create a tasty meal, complete with dessert. At first my attempts were futile, almost to the point of disgusting. Then, I braved new ideas and new ingredients and discovered that I didn't need what I used to crave and I was better off without it. I just wish I had Shirley's book a year ago to explain all of the types of foods and grains and what could be substituted for what and to have a whole range of recipes to tempt my taste buds. Well done, Shirley! Perhaps I'll venture and experiment more and put together a book to compliment yours, using only my recipes and ideas, of course. Fortunately I don’t have to concern myself with allergies, food sensitivities, or restrictions. Finally … Food I Can Eat!, by Shirley Plant (now in its fourth printing) offers a book-full of recipes – over 140 tasty easy recipes) that are free of: dairy, wheat, yeast, corn, sugar, eggs, soy, nuts, nightshade, and/or gluten. I do have a friend that is allergic to almost everything! It’s also so difficult to prepare a meal, that she can also enjoy. She actually carries cards (like business cards) that lists what she can eat … trust me, there aren’t many items listed.
I love how the book is filled with great tips and advice, like basic food combining, and hints to the cook, etc. There are many vegetarian and non-vegetarian suggestions; ultimately being aware of what you put into your body and choosing as close to natural as possible foods will bring you closer to optimal health. I really appreciate how Shirley has categorized the lists of foods and food families; it makes food rotation easier.
Finally … Food I Can Eat! is a definite add-on to my cookbook collection.
