Clifford's War: Without End

Rate this book
In this action-packed, twisty, and fast-paced continuation of the PI Clifford Dee thriller series, private investigator Clifford Dee is back with his team, this time in Northern Virginia, working with his former Army Rangers commander, Doyle Hamilton, in Washington D.C. After a U.S. Senator was murdered, Doyle was chosen to run in a special election to fill his office. To qualify, he must step down from his army command and decides to hand the division over to a former military rival of Clifford's, Kevin Burr, who shuts Clifford out from work out of spite.

While his teammate, Bailey, takes on a minor copyright case involving a budding rap star, they uncover connections between a government department that Burr used to run and another famous rap artist, Dark Fenix, who was about to tour overseas as a cover to smuggle weapons into Africa for Burr. Things worsen when he also finds a connection between Burr and a ring of assassins for hire. Clifford discloses this information to Doyle, which makes things worse and Clifford's team is targeted. He must now work with Special Agent Sims of the FBI to continue investigating the weapons dealing, find who is running the assassins, and dig up evidence to incriminate Burr...all without getting killed. Clifford's team gets Dark Fenix's Africa tour canceled and Burr is in the hot-seat because he cannot deliver the weapons to the African warlords as promised. Stretched too thin, Burr finds himself in a deadly bind.

Clifford and Sims take on the assassins, resulting in one of them ending up in the hospital and an office fire being set to cover up evidence. More assassins are sent to finish the job, which turns into an all-out brawl, but they manage to escape. The assassins' leader gets the drop on the team and plans to force Clifford to watch his team die, one by one. This time there doesn't seem to be any escape...

Fans of action thrillers and crime suspense like the TV series Burn Notice are sure to enjoy this mile-a-minute story of government conspiracy, car chases, lethal encounters, and humorous situations.

An irreverent comedic thriller that combines a high-octane plot with regular doses of levity.

Following the murder of a U.S. Senator, Commander Doyle Hamilton is backed by party leaders to run in a special election to fill the seat. Doyle needs to assemble a team he can trust, and among the first to enlist is private investigator Clifford Dee. Doyle was once Clifford’s commanding officer, and he makes it blatantly clear that Clifford’s team will be expected to dig up information that he could never get government authorization for. He’s also asked the Army Ranger-turned-PI to work closely with a rival who won’t make it easy for him.

Meanwhile, Clifford’s partner Bailey has taken a curious case involving two rap stars, a weapons smuggling ring and potential assassins (or as Clifford thinks of it, “That rap thing, right? It’s literally the only thing paying the bills right now”).

While both plotlines would have serious ramifications in the real world, Reed’s eye-rolling, wise-cracking characters are hardly white-knuckling it. Author J. Denison Reed has created a cast that is a blast to spend time with, and he excels at putting them in situations that defy conventions. In the opening scene, for example, Clifford and apprentice Sara are racing toward what seems like a crisis situation, with Clifford barking at Sara to drive ever faster and more dangerously. Turns out that the only crisis is the kidney stone that Clifford is about to pass.
As for the dead Senator, Sara apparently doesn’t read the news – and is blown away when she learns of his death (it was also in the case file Clifford gave her, which she did not read). Throughout, characters are just as likely to obsess over lighthearted minutiae (like the discovery of a vintage VCR) than they are over either case. The chemistry works well throughout, and the jokes land more often than not. The blend of action and comedy work so well that it’s easy to imagine Simon Pegg (Sean of the Dead, Mission Impossible) or Brad Pitt (Bullet Train, Oceans Eleven) playing the leads in a cinematic version.

Let’s hope Clifford’s War will be coming soon to a streaming service near you.

After reading the first book in the series of Clifford's War, of course, I had to buy and read its sequel as soon as I heard of it getting released. What a sequel indeed, with insights of the protagonist Clifford and his team of friends and ever-continuing exciting shots and twists of action and humor all tied in one. What I admire the most about this series out of all other book series, is the never-ending amount of time, research, and love dedicated to writing these characters coming to life. The author executed the storyline with Clifford taking ongoing risks amid anticipation and jeopardy but with the support of his lifelong friends. I found myself laughing out loud at times, furrowing my eyebrows with concern at others, and anticipation when things were taking a turn. To those who love crime, action, and/or thrillers, especially individuals looking for a book series to love, this is one of the best book series. I truly cannot wait to read the third book and read more of the author's works in the future.

I’m not sure what it is but I don’t vibe with the author’s writing style. This is the second book I have read with these characters and it just reads like a long police report. The story itself is very intriguing but I need more fluff content.

I loved this! Three different cases intertwine in another fast-paced thrill ride by J. Denison Reed.
I loved the character developments of the core group, especially Sara. I also really enjoyed Daniel's interactions with Paul Michaels.
