This is a non-fiction board book, full of 2-3 sentence long blurbs about various types of cats and cat related activities. The illustrations are very nice. It's a large board book, and very durable. It's kind of an oddball book because generally a board book is going to be for a younger child, but this one is very wordy.

This combination of subject, style and reading level makes it uniquely well suited to my daughter's situation. She's about to turn 6 this April, and has been reading single words since 3. Reading full sentences, and sounding out and figuring out new words since 4. Since she started school in September, it's been difficult to find books that challenge her reading skill, while having concepts that are young enough for her to understand. The book fits that bill nicely. It doesn't hurt things in the slightest that her favourite animals are cats.

This is a board book, but it has too much text to be appropriate for a baby or toddler. It's got a lot of info, but kept simple enough for, oh, a patient preschooler.

When I checked this out with my babies, we looked at the pictures while I improvised something simple to go with them.

Read this today with Little Miss. She says, "My favorite part was the kittens. I loved the cats and the kittens."
