Isayo, a Robot Fighter from the dregs of the galaxy and Zuthyra, a young but passionate governess, cross unlikely paths when the prospects of a dangerous invention, known as the Plexus, threatens to control the hearts and minds of greedy rulers. But, the closer they get to this device, the more they unveil the dark secrets surrounding it.
Determined to find answers, the battle scarred young commoner and the spirted heiress embark on a space adventure, fleeing pirates and powerful Elite leaders who are equally hungry for the power of the Plexus. It is suspected that keeper of this fabled device is an android named Koyeko. What began as a simple quest turns into a treacherous mission, as Zuthyra and Isayo race to find Koyeko before anyone else. The deeper they get involved, the more they realize how their lives are suspended by nothing more than a single thread. What happens when that thread is cut?
This story is absolutely gripping. I find science fiction often difficult to get into, but I really enjoyed this world and it’s unique set of characters and places.
Things I liked - • I have a soft spot for good names in a book and I loved these names! Zuthyra, Isayo, Koyeko - they really fit the tone of the story, and they belonged to characters that I could tell had depth and thoughtful development woven into their seams. • The discussion of good and evil, control and power, all the philosophies and ethical questions so many writers like to ignore, were intensely confronted in this book, and I have so much respect for that! • The story’s feel was in the vivid space between old-fashioned adventure and fresh, new sci-fi universe. I enjoyed following along on the unraveling of this empire’s fate!
Room for growth - • While I never got bored, the pacing felt a bit off. There were parts I felt unnecessary to go on about for so long and other parts I wanted to know deeper details of. Overall, though, the story kept me fully absorbed! • The typographical/grammatical errors are a small hindrance but they really do make a difference in the reading experience. Another round or two of edits and the text could be a lot more polished.
Well done, Rachel! I can’t wait to see what worlds you take us to next.
Here’s the thing, sci-fi is a scary genre to me sometimes. I think that I start thinking of just how BIG the setting can be and ALL the things it can do and I start to get overwhelmed. That didn’t happen with this book.
This book moved fairly quickly. I loved the pacing and that I was learning about the universe this story took place in as things were happening. I feel like that helped me keep my focus and interest. World building is so important, but sometimes I get really focused and forget the plot. Did not happen here.
The characters were great. I feel like, as a reader, you can definitely relate to them in some aspects…even if your life is completely different from theirs (which I assume it is, unless you have your own android or anything like that).
All in all, a fun story. And a really great one for someone who dabbles in sci-fi because the genre feels overwhelming.
