Crystal Winters has always stood out among the other kids, sporting blue hair, a razor-sharp mind, and a craving for adventure. On her tenth birthday, her parents give her permission to ride her bike beyond their immediate neighborhood. She rides far and finds a spooky mansion abandoned in the woods. Will she dare to cross the threshold and explore what lies within?
This is the kind of story you read and then you think about it, and you go do something else, and then you think about the story some more. I absolutely love the way this story opens. It opens like the wind - swiftly and ready to grab you.
I love the playful manner that Allen displays as she writes, using both Nobody and Silence as playmates and characters. I also love the willingness to draw the reader, child or not, into a vivid magical world using real grounding techniques.
