The book I read to research this post was The Rough Guide To Cape Town which is an excellent book which I bought from a local secondhand bookstore. Cape Town is an important city in South Africa which is a great tourist destination. I think this book is a great source of information on this city and its surrounding area. Some people here speak Afrikaans and most of the black people speak Xhosa but English is the widely accepted language for general use and you shouldn't have any problems as long as you speak English. The South Africa does contain a lot of words that are unique to this area though. Cape Town is one of the best places to do whale watching from land in the world. There is also Table Mountain which does have a cable car to the top. If you choose to follow one of the footpaths it might be an idea to take a guide as the paths can be dangerously worn in places and it can suffer from extreme weather like wind and low temperatures. Offshore there is what is now a museum but is Robben Island and is where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Prior to that it was used to lock up political prisoners by the Dutch & English when they ruled. There are quite a lot of companies that do boat trips out to the island but only the official one actually lands there. The price also includes a guided tour. Near Cape Town is one of only 2 penguin colonies on the African mainland. There is also the biggest nature reserve in this region of South Africa which is great for spotting elephants in the wild. Finally if you are feeling quite adventurous you can do a tandem parachute over Table Mountain from an airplane.
