LINEAR OPTIMISATION MODELS WITH APPLICATIONS: Part 2 [Second Edition, 2nd Impression] of Fundamentals of Operations Research

Rate this book
Consider an optimisation problem involving providing answers to any of the following a minimum demand to be met to sustain goodwill, quantities of raw materials needed per unit and available, the production cost per unit of each product, the budget on production costs and the different gross profit to be realised per unit, how much of each product should be produced weekly so as to maximise overall annual gross profit?Given the area of land available, the operational costs per unit area and the budget on operational costs, the revenue realised per unit of each product and the minimum overall amount to be realised to sustain profitability of the agricultural activities, what is the area to be cultivated with each of the agricultural products so as to minimise overall operational costs?Apparently the solutions to problems such as these (referred to as optimisation problems) are profoundly catered for through Operations Research/Management Science techniques. And the books in the Operations Research [unitus qum Management Scientists] series, this one in particular in this case, are just about these wonderful techniques. The approach to the development of the subject matter in the book focuses on Operations Research modelling rather than algebraic approach to linear optimisation models. There are four distinct features in the approach used in the book different from good number of textbooks on Operations Research and linear optimisation theory in particular. First the epistemological formation of linear optimisation as a sub-discipline of Operations Research has been explicitly introduced and emphasised throughout the book. Second a clear distinction is made between for example a structural constraint in the model (as a mathematical-theory-based structure in linear optimisation) and the respective limitation/requirement (in the respective linear optimisation problem) represented by the structural constraint. Third emphasis has been made in differentiating the linear optimisation models from the various linear optimisation problems solved through the respective models. Fourth data and decision making are underscored as the underpinnings of the application of the models in solving the optimisation problems. The style of writing has been deliberately designed to make the book lecture linear optimisation theory and techniques to the reader and in such a way that the reader enjoys the knowledge and its applications without fear of numbers, formulae and figures. And the sky is no longer the limit. After all, as much as the knowledge in basic algebra is needed, linear optimisation techniques deal with facts and not just with numbers, mathematical formulae and figures. The main topics covered are as 1: FOUNDATION CONCEPTS IN OPERATIONS RESEARCH1.1: GENERAL NATURE OF OPERATIONS STAGES IN THE APPLICATION OF OPERATIONS CATEGORIES OF OPERATIONS RESEARCH LINEAR OPTIMISATION EXERCISES2: STRUCTURE OF LINEAR OPTIMISATION MODELS2.1: FORMULATION EXAMPLES OF LINEAR OPTIMISATION CANONICAL DUAL EXERCISES3: SOLUTIONS OF LINEAR OPTIMISATION MODELS3.1: ROOT CONCEPTS AND SOLUTIONS OF CANONICAL PRIMAL AND DUAL MODEL OPTIMAL SOLUTIONS EXERCISES4: SOLUTION METHODS FOR LINEAR OPTIMISATION MODELS4.1: BOUNDARY-SOLUTIONS SIMPLEX EXERCISES5: TRANSPORTATION OPTIMISATION APPLICATIONS5.1: TRANSPORTATION OPTIMISATION PROBLEMS AND MODELS5.
