Vina: In the Eyes of a Child

Rate this book
On any given day one might pick up a newspaper in the United States and find an article relating to the physical and sexual abuse of our children. Rather than a clinical dissertation on child neglect and abuse,Ms. Thomas tells her story in a simple manner. Many of the readers will find themselves identifying with the nine-year old girl in the title as she struggles with the tragedies that have befallen her. The author lived through nine years of physical and sexual abuse. Her siblings and herself were starved, beaten and used sexually by a demented father. Her story chronicles this nightmare.

When I first started this book and right up until halfway through I would say ....I hated it ! It read like fiction to me. But I keep trudging along to try to finish it seeing as it was only 136 pages. So I keep going and turned out to get more engrossed as I read. To me it still could be envisioned as a peice of fiction but some things started to ring true to me as I read. Her "visions" in dreams. As much as people do not believe well it has happened to me a time or two and I do think she is telling the truth there. The abuse seems to ring true also. I feel so sorry as I do with any books I read like this where children suffer at the hands of those who are supposed to love and care for them the most. My past dealings with teh state I live in , the people who are to investegate tend to cover their own butts and do not worry about the children. I am not saying that for everyone in every human services job but anyone I have had to deal with. No one seems to think what these things do to the children and or seem to care what the after effects are. This one was taking place when we did not have so many services available such as crisis lines ect....Some of us come out unscathed from such abuse and others suffer long drawn out after effects. Maybe writing this book will help this lady heal, I bet it already has had some closer on her life and I wish her the best. And with no doubt I do say this book was worth the time it took to read and decifer.
