International Book Award San Francisco Book Festival Award Dr. Emily Grace is a renowned scientist and neurosurgeon. When Dr. Grace's marriage crumbles and she is diagnosed with a rare and fatal form of brain cancer, she must make an unthinkable decision. Risk fighting for her life against nearly impossible odds, or enter herself into the very program she created.
Eighty-seven years into the future, Dr. Grace will discover the hope and promise she offered her patients are far more complex and disturbing than she could have ever imagined. With the help of her sponsor, a man from her era, she must navigate a new world and attempt to understand the true meaning of reality. She will soon discover the terrifying consequences of playing God with the future.
With his third book, “Eyes of Morpheus,” award-winning author Kevin D. Miller maintains his record for creating outstanding fiction. In this futuristic thriller we meet 33-year- old Dr. Emily Grace, a preeminent neurosurgeon and founder of the Promise of Lazarus program headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona. Its mission is to offer hope to terminally ill patients and their families.
Dr. Grace selects the candidates and oversees a process that places them in a catatonic, semi-frozen state of suspended animation until a cure has been developed for their condition. The timeline for a patient’s cure and reawakening is unknown.
Early in the story we meet two-year-old Kyler Carson whose degenerative disease limits his lifespan to fourteen years, at best. The toddler touches Dr. Grace’s heart and she is eager to prolong his life. His parents are conflicted so they take Kyler home to consider this momentous decision. However, this isn’t the last time Dr. Grace sees Kyler but it’s in an unexpected circumstance.
Then Dr. Grace learns she is terminally ill with a malignant brain tumor spreading fast. Treatment offers little hope so she elects to become part of the program she was instrumental in developing. From this moment forward “Eyes of Morpheus” is an unpredictable, plus-pounding thrill ride full of twists and turns a reader will never see coming. I finished the book quickly, reading late into the night because I had to find out what happens.
I don’t want to spoil an exciting reading experience so I’ll reveal nothing more about Miller’s brilliant, highly-imaginative plot. He tells a complex story with amazing clarity and a great deal of pathos. His descriptive, well-balanced prose immersed me in the book’s diverse, often surprising, settings and sent the main characters straight to my heart. Speaking of hearts, Dr. Grace’s love interest is Travis McCallister—an engaging character of a character. “Eyes of Morpheus” has the kind of tension and high action found in thrillers. What is unique are passages that impart Dr. Grace’s new realizations—born from personal experience— about patient rights, the limits and consequences of her Lazarus program, and the power of the human mind to shape perceptions of reality.
I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a well-told, heart-in-your-teeth story that defies figuring how where it’s going and how it will end and leaves you wanting more.
This book had me from the beginning. Hard to put it down...so many twists and turns, a lot of action. I had no idea what to expect next and the ending was perfect. This book would make an exciting movie. Well done Kevin Miller...what an imagination!
With ‘Eyes of Morpheus’, Kevin D. Miller throws readers into a fast-paced, engaging story that explores interesting concepts and realities. The book plays on Emily’s past and future in several reality shifts that makes her question her sanity and belief. Is her life real, or is everything a dream induced by the Morpheus Project? Kevin D. Miller leads readers along a journey where they will also question what is real, hoping that Emily will finally break through into the real world and find peace and happiness. Emily’s character is well developed, as is her interaction with Travis, a somewhat comical personality. Some of the story twists come as startling surprises that stretches credibility, and the ending is less than satisfying. Nevertheless, ‘Eyes of Morpheus’ can be enjoyed if readers overlook these stumbling blocks.
Hat Trick!! Kevin Miller has done it again, going three for three in writing absolutely fabulous books! I received my copy of “Eyes of Morpheus” yesterday, started reading it and finished it last night — literally incapable of putting it down!
Kevin’s writing style is again replete with diverse, endearing characters, references to real locations, and situations which are both exciting and relatable. The reader is immediately drawn in as an observer in a fascinating stream of events.
I highly recommend all three of his books, each better than the previous in my estimation. Congratulations and thank you, Kevin…. Kenny Edwards
