When the infamous retired gunman, Gabriel Wolff, took the job of city marshal in Crystal City, Kansas, he succeeded in taming the wild cattle town in short order. The trouble was that he took to the notion that taming the town would end all the evil that lurked there. As Gabriel grapples with catching a serial murderer, he struggles with concerns for his lasting legacy and whether the townsfolk might think he’s getting too old for the job. Along the way, he continues to be challenged by his relationship with the spirted saloonkeeper, Tilly, and the teaching of his surrogate son, Teddy, what it means to be a man. With a little luck, Gabriel just might get to live out his senior years as a happy man.
Duane Boehm grew up on a farm outside of Petersburg, Illinois. All the time spent driving a tractor gave him plenty of opportunity to let his imagination run wild and not tear up too much equipment. The two passions he developed early in life were the love of playing guitar and reading books.
He eventually moved to a mini-farm outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his wife and replaced planting corn with trees and raising dogs. For a number of years he worked as an IT consultant and continued with being a part-time musician and songwriter. He dabbled in writing short stories with the idea in the back of his mind that someday he would write a novel. One Christmas after watching "A Christmas Carol", he was inspired to begin his journey as a novelist.
BEING OLD IS JUST A STATE OF MIND & AS SUCH, YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR WAYS & THE WAY THE WORLD SEES YOU
☆☆☆☆☆
An old retired gunman who comes to the conclusion that his life really wasn't lived as a person he is proud of and if there is something he can do to leave a legacy that somewhat makes up for his past indiscretions and life choices he's going to give it his all even if it kills him.
Old Enough To Know Better (Never Too Old Westerns Book 2) by Duane Boehm is a interesting tell of a man set to change his reputation into a favorable one that will be looked on by others as a man who stood for what's right and fought with everything he had for good versus evil and those he loves and those who are innocent or those who have been wronged. This is a story of hope for a small town and its residents, friendship and love, joy and happiness, and well as loss and hardships all being met head-on to do what's right.
The main characters, Gabriel, Long John, Teddy, Tilly, Lucy, Clarence, and all the rest of the cast are ones that are clearly brought to life on the pages and you will find yourself glued to see how they deal with life in 1884 in Kansas. You'll find yourself laughing one minute, crying the next, and jumping for joy when they bring their justice to the bad guys. You have to really love a man that hates another man that is a low-life wife-beater and returns the tides and beats the living hell out of said wife-beater. I have really enjoyed reading this book and series and hope you will find yourself enjoying it as much as I have. This is one of those books that you'll have a hard time putting it down and when the end comes, you'll be wishing that there was more to the story.
Quotes: "The only men that don't make mistakes are those that don't do a damned thing."
Gabriel realized he wasn't too old to change from a selfish, heartless, killer. His transition is amazing. his chosen town is perfectly developed with a slew of characters you enjoy getting to know.
Regardless of how safe we may try to be there are always surprises around every curve and corner. As Gabriel's instincts get challenged he finds himself being both right and wrong. As some real life situations play out, both good and bad, the humor that gets tossed in at various times is a good reminder to enjoy life. Look forward to continuing the adventures in Crystal City.
Great characters, terrific dialogue, a little romance and plenty of action make for an excellent western. I have read all of his western novels, all of which are great reads, and this is no exception. While there is plenty of action, it is the character relationships that always stand out. I hope to see more of Gabriel, Long John, Tilly, etal in future volumes.
I have to say that I really really enjoyed these two book or stories if you will...great characters ,mostly serious but also with great humor and love..rich story lines and plot..great great read
My second read of the Never too Old series. Duane Boehm does a great job of creating multi-layered, enjoyable characters. His books are an easy read and a page turner.
Duane Boehm is a wonderful storyteller and his western sagas are a delight to read. Great characters like old Gabriel and Long John kept me entertained and engaged to the very end. The author knows how to bring out the laughter and the tears in the telling of the tale.
Another adventure of Gabriel and all of the town's people. The whole town is like family. Many adventures, some ended with tragedy while other filled with joy.
I am sorry that I don't have the words to let you know that you are a great writer and story teller. You held me through two books. I could not hardly put the books down even to eat or sleep. THANK YOU
Enjoyed. The give and take of the central characters was refreshing. It was an easy quick read that made dense . I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read...
