Alright everyone knows how much I rave about Riley Sager. I love his thrillers and let’s just say the expectations were high. He has a special way with tension and builds it masterfully whilst making us doubt the narrator which is one of my favorite things. Until about 75% in, I was FULLY conviced this was a potential 4-5 stars read. Enter the weird paranormal mumbojumbo and naturally I hated that. Sager sortof sells it anyway and turns things around a bit but sadly the damage was done. All in all it turned out pretty alright and I will most definitely keep on reading the rest of his repertoar.
I loved this book. So many different things caught me so entirely off guard. But in a good, I need to know what happens next, kind of way. It was a quick, two day read because I couldn't put it down.
this was an interesting read. i’m cautious to give out 5 stars only because of the paranormal turn the book eventually took. i was appreciative of it because i normally wouldn’t reach for that if i had known, however it did damper the conclusion for me a bit. i really enjoyed the plot and the characters - the book had me trying to figure it out for a while, but due to the paranormal aspect, the book lost me a bit and i wasn’t so desperate to discover the conclusion of the book. i would try this author again.
Good not great!! I finished this over a week long vacation - the last half of the whole thing being read on my flight home - all that to say, easy to read! The first half always feels a bit overly predictable, but I 1000% did not see the twist(s?!) coming in the second half. Maybe a bit of a weird turn for some, but I like that kinda theme/genre so I was glad to see it pop up.
I have mixed feelings about this book. Slow to begin and perhaps a little too reminiscent of Girl on a Train. Once the pace picked up it was good until the plot reveals knowledge that if the main character really knew her whole inner dialogue would have been dramatically different.
Enjoyed the characters. No cheesy dialogue. Plot was addicting. I wasn’t expecting the paranormal aspect and I enjoyed it even though I wouldn’t typically go for that genre. Ending was satisfying.
