Okamura and Lilysa are planning to save the manga club via a convention appearance. When Nagomi, a cosplay champion, appears, however, things start to go off the rails. It’s going to take a lot of heart and a lot of sensei flesh to even the odds as the battle for the male gaze begins!

No, seriously, this volume is essentially a battle between two cosplay artists whose metrics are the number of otaku photographers they can hook the eyeballs of, which is kind of stereotypical (if believable), but makes for a great hook.

It was pretty obvious that the ‘Four Heavenly Queens of Cosplay’ idea was setting up something along the lines of a battle manga and that doesn’t hurt to differentiate this manga from other cosplay books of its ilk. It lets you get the costumes front and centre and draw the female cast in various poses, but justifying the heck out of it at the same time.

And it really works because, as draining as battle manga can be, this story has always remembered to have the heart to be something more than another visit to the smut factory and I love the ongoing dynamic between Okamura and Lilysa in particular.

Okamura is not in this book a ton, but he does exactly enough and is there for Lilysa exactly when she needs it, which is pretty great for a cardboard protagonist. The way he enables Lilysa to be herself and not be ashamed of what she loves, even if that happens to be erotic cosplay, is perfect stuff. She makes the journey, but he points the way.

Nagomi, meanwhile, has paid a hefty price for her fame, having it come at the cost of her love of cosplay. She makes a great foil, since she decimated Lilysa’s confidence last volume and made her question everything, but Nagomi herself has those same issues, barely remembering why she does what she does.

I also love the way that Lilysa’s depth of knowledge about her character is contrasted with Nagomi’s width of playing a range of popular characters. It would be very hard for the relatively new Lilysa to win in this situation, but she does a very, very good job holding her own once she finds her answers and I’ve read a lot worse in terms of manga fights.

And seeing Mayuri-sensei drawn back into things as the club advisor is a lot of fun too. We knew she’d enter the cosplay world again, but watching her fumble around on muscle memory makes for a great start to this volume. Her interaction with Lilysa is absolutely the sweetest thing in the world and I’m glad they kept that hug blissfully non-sexual because it’s such a strong moment for both of them.

The story really takes the lead here, along with the character dynamics, making this surprisingly tame on wardrobe flashing until the bonus section. It adds weight to things not seeing it dissolve into sex farce for a change in favour of pushing the drama. The one moment it seems to be going down that road it smartly veers away from. Good choices are made here.

Yeah, okay, there’s a pretty clear harem angle brewing here, since Nagomi thinks Okamura is the spitting image of the 2D prince that she loves and who inspired her to get into shape and start cosplaying to begin with. But this is one of those stories where the OTP has been clear from the start, so I’ll allow it.

3.5 stars - this series, geeze, I knew it would get me to round it up eventually. It really does have something to say and I mention the heart at its core every time because I genuinely think that elevates it above its appearance as mere ecchi excess (that bonus manga maybe notwithstanding).

This one was really enjoyable.

Lilysa is shaken to the core when another cosplayer questions her love for cosplay. So Lilysa tries to find the reasoning she even cosplays in the first place. Okumura stuck trying to find the answers for her, all while their teacher decides to step in and help them out by going back to her old ways as a Cosplayer to rival the other girls.

It's a lot of fun watching both rivalry grow but also how competitive cosplaying can actually be. Not so simple just to dress up. You need to get the crowd backing you 100% while others are out there performing as well. Really enjoyable character, and some nice titty shots so that's a extra point in my book (Joking...maybe) Overall a 4 out of 5.

I loved this. This issue discussed what it means to be a cosplayer, and I loved the conversation between the characters. I will continue the series later, but I will be reading for sure. This one had a lot of photographers clicking thousands of pics. I would be one of them if I lived in that world. So, let's sleep now and then. Keep on reading.

I have always loved comics, and I can and I have. I love comics to bits, may the comics never leave my side. I loved reading this and love reading more. You should also read what you love, and I hope you will always love it. Even though I grew up reading local Indian comics like Raj Comics, Diamond Comics, or even Manoj Comics, now's the time to catch up on international and classic comics, Mangas, Mahwas, and Graphic novels. I am on my quest to read as many comics as I just want to Keep on Reading.

This is probably a good stopping point for this series. Wikipedia says there are already 17 volumes for this series. Although it's not a harem manga yet, the signs are on the horizon. If I find future volumes in the bookstore, I may change my mind.
