Granted, I am no fan of profanity, but this book is just ridiculous. I became curious and had to borrow it after I saw a listing of the top ten most poorly written books of all time (needless to say, this book made the list). After checking the book out, I have to concur with the list. The book is written in a patronizing yet terribly immature manner. It’s rather ridiculous and over-the-top. I’m fine with children advocating for improving language usage, but this is a rather lame example of profiteering disguised as social betterment by promoting an awful, poorly-constructed website and club. I also agree with other reviewers that the publishers should be ashamed of themselves for promoting this person as the “most cyber-bullied kid in America” as it becomes quite obvious that this is not the case. With all the true victims of bullying who struggle to make their way through school and life each day, it is a social injustice to lump this kid in with them. I would not recommend this shameful attempt at self-promotion to anyone. The concept of profanity is subjective. What is considered a vulgar term in one region of the country is sometimes acceptable in another, word meanings vary and so on. Any word labeled as profanity can easily be replaced by another word that may also be deemed profane eventually. Concepts and/or words considered profane or vulgar also change over time. Many words that are commonplace nowadays would have induced gasps a century ago. Words that are not considered profanity can also be abused depending on their usage. Some of the meanest and/or most hurtful phrases I’ve heard or read actually do not contain profane words, rather these phrases consisted of average, everyday words used in an ugly manner. Instead of trying to figure out exactly what constitutes profanity, I think the time and effort expended on the topic could be better used trying to promote civility and decency towards one another. I would rather see someone invest time advocating for social justice through an anti-bullying campaign than advocating for language police.
I found this just to point and laugh at it. Literally one of the worst books ever. This kid was not bullied - he was just an arse who was completely close-minded to anyone else's right to exist. I wonder how many schools wasted their funds to bring him and his blood orange wristbands in. Let's not forget the website from like, 1998: http://www.nocussing.com/ Eff this.
I'm honestly amazed that my favorite review on Amazon (from 2010) still exists:
"I recently purchased this book for my child to reward him for his good behaviour. He has never sworn around me or around other parents, he restricts his internet useage to educational sites that I have pre-approved (such as informative online encyclopedias), he completes all his chores without argument, be it washing the car or helping his little sister get ready for baths - he even suprises us by cooking the most delicious cakes, but after reading this book he has become unmanageable. It's like this book turned on some kind of innner demon inside of him where he refuses to do as he is told, refuses to help wash his little sister and, most suprisingly, swears over 9000 times a day (though this is probably a slight exaggeration). Me and his mother do not know what to do. We burnt the book in a tasteful wiccan ceremony but it still has his grip on him.
If anyone knows how to return him to his former-self (without all the swearing and disobedience) I'd be more than happy to hear it. We are open to potential spells, after all a spell did help to bring back our favourite dog 'Brocolli', but we don't want to cause him any further harm."
This is an excellent book about a courageous young man who took a stand against cussing in his school. As a result he has been the brunt of bullying at school as well as the recipients of tens of thousands of hateful e-mails and other forms of cyberbullying. The book explains how he has handled the challenges and tells about the positive impact his No Cussing Club has had, including the way it has grown to now include more than 20,000 members, with members in every state and more than 33 nations.
I can't say I have a lot of sympathy for what happened to this fucker, the little shit brought it upon himself. If you decide to be a self-righteous dickhead and bitch about other people's language, don't be surprised when they decide to fuck with you. Also, Jesus Fucking Christ that cover looks like ass.
