The A Memoir, written by Jennifer Cerny, Nurse Practitioner, is part tongue-in-cheek memoir and part cathartic journal. It's the story of Jenny’s ordinary, yet extraordinary journey to become the very best version of herself.
Throughout the book, she reveals how she eventually fused her deep love of women’s health and psychology, and in doing so, created something new and unique in the way she provided care to her patients… which led to her nickname, “The Gynechiatrist”- a term that was coined by a long-time patient of hers.
The book is a first person account which begins with the tale of her own kidnapping as a small child (by her parents). It chronicles the author’s dysfunctional childhood and includes tales of her early NP career in the rural south and later provides a raw and genuine analysis of her personal struggles and triumphs over adversity. Jenny explores her journey of grief, love, loss, addiction, abuse, family dysfunction, and it also brings to light various psychological and mental health issues, all through the lens of the author’s personal and professional experiences. It's poignant, relevant, and intimately relatable, because these subjects have become a large part of the twenty-first century's consciousness and everyday conversation.
More importantly, Jenny explores, with honesty, her determination and sacrifice, as they relate to hard work, perseverance, self-discovery, recovery, redemption, and above all, hope and love.
By sharing her stories, and through her history, it's the author's hope that readers will not only gain a peek into her life and psyche, but will also provide insight into themselves and others.
Jennifer Cerny is a practicing women's health nurse practitioner working at a large OB GYN practice in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In addition to her deep passion and expertise in gynecology, Jennifer has spent countless hours studying psychology and mental health disorders in order to provide a more holistic approach to her patients' care. This unique fusion of gynecology and psychiatry led to her nickname- The Gynechiatrist.
Jennifer lives a quiet life in the country and is married to Chip, an avid outdoors man. Their adult son, Hunter, works as a vet tech at an animal hospital and is planning a career in law enforcement.
When Jennifer is not working or studying gynecology or psychology, she loves to work out, drink raw kale juice and watch true crime documentaries.
Her first book- The Gynechiatrist: A Memoir is the story of the first half of her life, It includes tales of her dysfunctional childhood, early nurse practitioner career in the deep South and struggles with alcohol use disorder. Its raw, honest and full of laughs and heartache. She wants the reader to understand that love does exist in chaos and life is what you make it.
Starting in the first chapter, I was hooked by the authors relaxed-feeling honesty and insight. The scenes were so well described that I thought about the parts that had me laughing out loud/ tearing up/ shocked … for days after I’d read it. It’s a wild ride through the author’s early and midlife. For sure. But she makes it so enjoyable to be there with her through the twists and turns. Of course I’ve told everyone I see about how much I enjoyed this book. I recommend it whole heartedly and am just so thankful the author has shared these stories. I’m still laughing!
