Golden Pineapple Diaries is a collection of super gay short horror stories by Finley Rose. Full of drag queens, cupcakes, witches, and a meat cleaver-wielding teenage serial killer on a rampage. Includes the previously released novella A Silent Note.
This collection of short stories is the introduction to Finley Rose's upcoming House of Black vampire series.
Golden Pineapple Diaries is a collection of short stories with interconnections of varying degrees -- events or characters from earlier stories in the book are mentioned or appear. I enjoy when novels or story collections employ this technique so it's definitely one of the reasons I purchased the book.
Some of the highlights:
A Silent Note -- my favorite story of the collection. Marques, a famous singer, buys a piano with a sinister past. Classic horror vibes and it sets the bar high for the rest of the book.
Dragwitch -- Skittles, Pumpkin, and Bubble have my heart. I'll gladly eat ice cream with a spork. This story is a fun read with drag queen witches and spell-casting on a camp grill with unexpected consequences. (Hint: it's related to A Silent Note).
The one gripe:
The end of the collection was sudden as in "that's it?" The last two stories (before the preview to an upcoming novel) felt more like chapters or previews belonging to another book. Carmella is related to Dragwitches and Rensy Revisited and ends with an almost To Be Continued-like ending. Joanie Flynn and The Electrocuties cameos the characters from A Silent Note and a throw back from Ellie Whispers. There are a lot of loose ends left beyond what the reader can fill in with their imagination.
Worth the read? Definitely but prepare to be left wanting more...
Have you ever read a short story collection... where all the stories reference other stories in the collection? and are actually related... in a way that makes it... not really a short story collection but more like a Frankensteined novel? Because that’s essentially what this is. A haunted piano, drag queen witches, vampires, a teenage serial killer, and more. While most of these can be read as stand-alone short stories, they do work best when read in order, as they take place on a timeline and may refer to events from the previous stories. I really struggle with reading short story collections (and short stories in general), but this was a pretty easy read, especially once I realised they were all connected. We know by now, I’m a sucker for connections between an author’s different works, especially when it’s done in a way that makes it clever or important. It works as a sort of prequel to a series the author is working on about vampires (The Unfortunates). There’s also a reference to another of their novels, Atomic Love.
It opens with an imaginative cursed instrument novella. Marques, a famous singer, buys a piano with quite a history behind it. He is so obsessed with it that he ignores his husband and assistant. I loved the gothic, haunted feel of it. The descriptions are vivid and you can feel the offness of the piano. Dread follows as the events unfold. I have to warn, there are a lot of details and they're important to the rest of the collection.
My favorite story is Dragwitch. It has a whimsical atmosphere that is delightful as the desserts that the drag queen witches serve on their food truck. The characters are larger than life, and the dialogue is very witty.
The first two stories seem like they're stand-alones, but they're not. Rose establishes an incredible paranormal world with a Silent Note. Rage surprised me, especially later on. I really enjoyed experiencing how the main plot plays out in a very clever way through each story. This collection is a ton of fun!
