2nd Line West: Love, Care and Share
A True story of Tragedy, Grief, Redemption, Joy and Fulfilment
Margie, a beautiful young widow with four children, created a haven in her family home on 2nd Line West for people who needed a place to land after life offered them up sadness, depression or misfortune. 2nd Line West became their place for a second chance.
In this loving memoir, Tom Herstad shares the story of his mother’s impact on many lives.
You'll witness a woman’s life, look deep into a family’s story, then read the amazing stories from so many of those she helped. Margie used her wisdom and strength to influence and coach the positive transformation of many souls, all the while reinventing herself.
These stories remind us of something we are born with, most everyone has forgotten.

This was an easy, soft yet pleasant read. It's a reminder that regardless of anyone's path in life, we all have room to grow and learn and who we become; is in direct relation to the choices we make.
Through out the book, Tom talks about what his mother taught him which occurs directly and indirectly through her life's journey. It's a valuable story and life experience for anyone to indulge in as it describes very detailed encounters that can paint a pretty picture even for those who only dream on a blank canvas. It's a reminder that good things do happen to good people and that the nice guy certainly does not finish last. I am left asking myself, Why did Gerry (Tom's father) leave to travel abroad in such a manner? Knowing his parenting style and keen sense of responsibility, why was there no real explanation? I was able to conclude an answer through out the book and was satisfied knowing that even when his father did leave, he did not leave them with nothing. He did not completely disappear. It's almost as if he knew they needed a break. That through the fight for the love of his life and better good of his family, he was almost losing himself.
Margie(Tom's mother) is completely selfless. She instills that in everyone simply because it's who she is. I don't believe it's always who she was and was something she grew into. Tom's father professed his love for Margie while she was pregnant with another mans child when they were still teenagers. His response to her was "I love you and always will"
Reading about her late second marriage and how she dealt with issues that arose and how she would result to old bad habits told me , she obtained a lot of patience with how Gerry loved her. We learn a lot about ourselves or simply make decisions on who we want to be indirectly and it's seldomly spoken on. Tom does a great job helping readers understand this and although the book is him informing the world of his mothers ways, deep within the lines there is the real unsung hero which is his father. I cover my mouthpiece and say "you should be ashamed of yourself" because a real man knows the power of a real woman, hence, Margie's grace that brought this book upon us.
This book is a reminder that who we choose to be is much more valuable than what we want to be.
