Sasquatch Discovered: The Biography of Dr. John Bindernagel

Rate this book
Sasquatch Discovered is the biography of Dr. John Bindernagel – Canada’s foremost sasquatch/bigfoot investigator. His intense childhood curiosity about the natural world, with a particular interest in ornithology, led to his involvement as a Junior Naturalist and his teacher dubbing him “the scientist” for his in-class contributions. By high-school, he was practicing good curatorial habits as he collected specimens for the museum he created in the family home.

While in university, he was intrigued by the story of an “ape-man” in British Columbia. During his time in Africa, he became familiar with the great apes and hypothesized the Sasquatch as North America’s great ape. On return to Canada, he chose to live in the Comox Valley, on Vancouver Island, B.C., and closer to the west coast rainforests– prime Sasquatch habitat. Here he aimed to study and pursue research on this elusive animal.

John Bindernagel was the author of two seminal books, a popular conference speaker throughout North America, and the Canadian news media “go-to guy” for Sasquatch information. He was beloved by eyewitnesses and amateur investigators alike but largely dismissed by the scientific community. This book is a tribute to an upstanding man who followed his call and his passion at great personal and professional expense. He spent his last years championing the unfolding story of the discovery of the Sasquatch. This is his life’s story.

A very insightful read. I was a sceptic and now I believe in the evidence of the Sasquatch species. In addition, I’m gobsmacked by the passion and courage of Dr John Bindernagel. He is a role model of integrity, tenacity and optimism as he never gave up on his research journey.

As a scientist, I was a skeptic, but after reading Sasquatch Discovered, The Biography of Dr. John Bindernagel by Terrance N. James, Ph.D., I am shocked at how close-minded and uneducated I was, falling victim to propaganda in the mass media.

I was immediately aligned with Dr. Bindernagel, his scientific pursuits, his travels, and even his extracurricular activities. I felt very connected to him while reading, which made his struggles that much more understandable.

Dr. Bindernagel’s efforts to scientifically study sasquatch were challenged by the very institution that he was devoted to. His life work highlighted and called into question the powerful influence that popular culture and the media play in the role of science.

Sadly, because of the highly criticized nature of the topic, when encounters with sasquatch do happen, people do not feel safe in our society to report them. Dr. Bindernagel was single handily changing this reality. Acting not only as scientist and researcher, he often became a therapist and friend to eyewitnesses, even decades after their sasquatch meetings.

I feel this biography was not written to prove the existence of sasquatch, the evidence speaks for itself. Instead, it speaks to a larger, contemporary issue, where we as a society, do not question our beliefs often enough.

I had to confront my own beliefs often as I read, about science as an institution, and the passionate belief in sasquatch. My views on both, as well as many other topics have shifted.

I am compassionate for Dr. Bindernagel as I don't know that I would have had the strength to preserve against such great odds.

Even as I openly discuss the joyful experience of reading this book, I am faced with a taste of mockery, shame, disbelief, and close-mindedness that continues to shroud the truth.

This is the beginning of a conversation that I hope to have more often.

John Bindernagle was a fascinating man, not just because of the fact that he spent the last part of his life investigating the Sasquatch phenomenon but because of the wealth of experiences that he brought to his passion. He was essentially a biologist who worked world-wide to study wildlife and educate people in the need for responsible conservation of the world that God made. His later interest in Sasquatch benefited from his collective knowledge of nature and culture. While most academics avoided the topic of Sasquatch for fear of their professional future, Bindernagel did not have those academic restraints and felt free to speak his mind on the subject. He became a well-respected authority and was in demand as a conference speaker and as a go-to expert for television and documentary films. The author does a great job in presenting his friend as a wise and compassionate advocate for the responsible study of this illusive creature. If you are looking for reports of Bigfoot sightings you will have to look elsewhere. This book is a biography but it is well worth your time to read because it will give you perhaps a perspective on the topic that you may not have considered before.
