Queen of the Wild Range

Rate this book
Fresh from her perilous journey above the cloud, Tovi is impatient for more adventure and begs for Silas to give her a task. When his response is not what she wanted, Tovi takes matters into her own hands, battling floods and fire on her way to a strange land.

Trapped on the mountain, King Damien and his loyal weapons build their army and plot their next moves. They must collect his heirs, root out the treasonous resistance, and stop the prophecies from ever coming true. An old magic stirs in Damien’s lungs, but he needs a jar of Silas’ paint to use his powers. When one in his most inner circle reveals a disgusting secret, Damien knows it is only a matter of time before the paint is in his hands. Then, victory will forever be his.

Far from Adia, in a cave above the sea, another prophecy awaits Tovi, pointing to an overwhelming and unwanted destiny that will require another visit to her grandfather’s kingdom above the cloud.

Queen of the Wild Range is the second book in the Tales from Adia series that chronicles the life of Tovi Tivka from angry, abandoned orphan to powerful heir of Mount Damien.

Maggie Platt’s Queen of the Wild Range is a masterful sequel that takes the compelling foundation of Tales from Adia and expands it into a breathtaking, perilous, and profoundly moving epic. This second installment doesn’t just continue Tovi Tivka’s story it deepens, complicates, and propels it forward with irresistible force and heart.
The novel shines in its rich, dual-perspective narrative. Tovi’s restless, post-adventure energy is palpable, and her decision to take matters into her own hands leads to a harrowing journey through floods, fire, and a strange new land. Her character growth is expertly rendered; we see the “angry, abandoned orphan” wrestling with the first daunting hints of the “powerful heir” she is becoming, especially when faced with an “overwhelming and unwanted destiny.” Her strength is as compelling as her vulnerability.
In stark, thrilling contrast is the storyline of King Damien, trapped yet scheming on his mountain. Platt builds a delicious tension around his malevolent patience, the “old magic” stirring within him, and his ruthless quest for Silas’s paint. The revelation of a “disgusting secret” within his inner circle adds a layer of paranoia and intrigue that makes his chapters pulse with sinister energy. The collision course between his quest for absolute victory and Tovi’s unfolding prophecy promises a confrontation of epic proportions.
Platt’s world-building continues to dazzle, effortlessly weaving between the grounded struggles of the wild range and the mystical realms “above the cloud.” The prose is vivid and immersive, making each setting from storm-ravaged landscapes to secret sea caves feel tangible and alive.
Queen of the Wild Range is a triumph of middle-series storytelling. It deepens the lore, raises the stakes exponentially, and delivers pivotal character transformations that will leave readers utterly invested. Maggie Platt has crafted a fantasy that is both thrillingly expansive and intimately character-driven. A spectacular 5-star read that cements this series as a must-follow.

I really enjoyed the continuation of Tales from Adia! This book is packed with wisdom and grace, the allegory showing what it looks like when God allows us freedom to choose Him or our own way. Tovi's journey gives me hope that God will keep making new ways for his will to be done no matter how I may mess up. Like the first book, I found this one felt a little slow to get started, but as the action pieces of the story picked up, I was glad to have been prepared in the 'slower' part. (In book 1, it was setting up the characters and their colors, which turns out to be a key element. In book 2, it is Adwin's wisdom preparing the characters for the path ahead. Please don't put the book down while you are waiting for more action - it comes and you will be glad for the foundation laid).

I am excited to watch Tovi's story - really Adwin's story - unfold even further! And I'm really hopeful that someday these characters will show their colors on the screen.

Awesome adventure, growth in characters, and beautiful world building all blend together to continue this series which my daughter and I are enjoying immensely. The story is allegorical in nature, with a spiritual bend I've been loving. True, it's fiction, but I can see where the author is going and what she's alluding to quite clearly. Whether someone else sees the same thing, I don't know. Still, there are some great life lessons being taught in these characters. The story is clean. There are characters in the tale a reader can look up to, as well as relate to, which I find lacking in so many other books written by modern authors. If you get a chance to read this book, don't pass it up.

This book was just as good as the first one. I could really relate to the main character cause she’s just as stubborn as me to do her own thing and not listen like me but I could relate which helped me out actually. So 10/10 would definitely recommend
