About the author

Marlon Buchanan is an IT Director by day and a writer and home technology hacker (the good kind) by night. He has over 25 years of combined experience as an IT director, software developer, systems analyst, college instructor, and smart home consultant. He has a bachelor’s in computer science and engineering from MIT and master’s degrees in business administration and software engineering from Seattle University.
He has been automating things around his house since he was a kid. Now, his wife and kids get to enjoy the fruits of his smart home exploits. He is best known for his smart home, home networking, and cord-cutting articles on his blog HomeTechHacker.com and his book, The Smart Home Manual.

Marlon Buchanan has put together a thorough explanation of all things home network. It was much easier to read than I expected. The author gives a personal explanation of just about everything I can think of regarding what a home network is, why it is important, how to build it and how to make sure it is tweaked to meet my needs, etc. He also gives examples as well as references for further explanation and more in-depth knowledge. I must admit (only in this review) that I knew a lot less than I would say, but the information in this book has clarified the fuzzy pieces of my understanding and I feel all experty. Well done.

Good information for both novice and experienced users

With ever changing home network equipment and changes from internet providers even someone who knows what they are doing needs a bit of a refresher. So when I picked this manual up I was hoping for just that, especially as home networking equipment has changed a lot over the last couple of years with all the smart home stuff. I did breeze through some of the book but other parts were more of what I was looking for. I found the information to be nicely explained and pretty helpful, giving me a couple insights on things I was curious about. There were some things that I did skip as they were not of interest to me but overall it was a good book with useful information and would be helpful to anyone, whether novice or experienced with home networking.

This book could be quite helpful if you’re looking to build or upgrade your home network. I found it well written and organized in a way that takes you through the process. I am far more enlightened than I was. While the information can be a lot I feel that I can alway research and cross reference with the knowledge I’ve gained. I have not set up my network yet but this book gives me the confidence to do it.
