What is it to be human? Is it a life of only hardship and difficult decisions to try and live honestly? Or is it a life on the easy road where we cheat and steal, where we deal dishonesty to try and skirt around life’s hardships and to gain power and wealth?

Life is what we make it. Life is hard on everyone. Whether we choose to work hard to provide for our families or we deal dishonesty for our own benefit and eventually reap the consequences.

In these short stories by Mangalam Shiva, we witness the success, failures, and regrets of many characters, as well as the seemingly unbalanced scales of justice. Life is not fair, but perhaps through these stories, we can look at ourselves and take a moment to recognize what is truly important, what truly matters, and the things that will bring lasting comfort and joy.

The author, in this collection of short stories, has addressed various issues that ail our society in the form of immoral and corrupt activities by a few individuals and sometimes a group of persons. In the story Twin Urchins, it is endearing to know that there is a reward in the end for the boys' honesty and hard work. In Gratification, the message is that there is recovery for a young girl who has fallen into a bad habit. In Divine Punishment, one is reminded of the saying that the Divine is watching over all humans and to always follow their conscience before doing any ill deeds. Dirty Dozen reads like a thriller.
Nice collection of stories.
