When Ellyria’s father died, he left the family spell book hidden. To make matters worse, her mother fell into a drug habit, leaving the teenager to handle the household finances alone. Desperate for help and with no other options, she researched a spell on the internet and cast it in a hurry, accidentally binding herself into a ritual with a demon.
The demon, Zangrunath, thinks his latest assignment is below his stature in the demonic hierarchy, but he does his job to fulfill the witch’s desires until he takes notice of the potency of her magic and the intruders lurking around her home at night.
Ellyria must navigate the last few months of high school, budding relationships, and college applications, all while Zangrunath harbors a dark secret. Magic hunters want her dead, and he must find a scapegoat to ward them off before Ellyria meets the same tragic fate as her father before her.
This book was originally published as Covenant, Book 1 of the Terms and Conditions trilogy.
I knew by page 9 that I would love this book, and I was right. I absolutely loved Ellyria and the journey she went on. Her characterisation was really well thought out. All she wanted to do was try her best and make her own path in life as she grieved. Instead, she accidently bound herself to a demon and became a target.
I loved the comradeship between Ellyria and Zane. His development was also extraordinary as he moved from pissed off demon to an utter softy but just for her.
The darkness that McLeod has weaved into this story is delightful. At times, it's gothic & self suffering, and at others, it felt like a thriller.
I really enjoyed this book, and I'm glad that I could message the author when I cackled at parts or when I was sad and guilty. This book really does take you on a journey of emotions.
The twists and turns of this book kept you on the edge the entire way through. I finished it in 2 reading sessions. It's rare a book hooks me like this, and if it wasn't for the fact I have some ARCs to read, I'd dive straight into the next book in the series.
If you're looking at this review trying to decide if you're going to read the book, read it. I promise you will enjoy the ride!
When trying to perform a ritual to speak to her deceased father, inexperienced teenage witch Ellyria accidentally summons and binds herself to the powerful demon Zangrunath, a general in one of Hell's armies. His contract requires him to be bound to her until her dreams come true, making him a dark and deadly fairy godmother, of sorts.
Zangrunath, or Zane, makes sure Ellyria is taken care of in every capacity, from making her breakfast to destroying her enemies. And the list of enemies keeps growing as Elly and Zane realize that she is a powerful witch with a target on her back. Anyone could be secretly watching her and trying to contain her magic...and those people will not be long for this world.
The first half of this book will have you in a "oh, that's cute!" sort of mindset as their partnership grows and Elly finds her way around her own magic. But at the halfway mark, things go from 0 to 100 in an instant, and the twists and turns the author takes you on will have you shouting, "Damnit, McLeod!" and really rooting for Elly to succeed.
This is an amazing book! Throughout the story, I was captivated by who or what was sus and trying to figure out how this one would end. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a good YA book.
Angles and humans aren't supposed to have children. That is a rule breaker. The children of angles became the Titans and God cast them and the angels that broke that rule to hell.
This is a story that will stick with you with just enough angst to keep you pulled in. I loved the sassy demon and am so glad I got the chance to read about their shenanigans!
I was unable to finish this book. I read up to Article IV if that helps anyone. I gave it a shot and it wasn't for me. I stopped reading the book because I just didn't enjoy the characters. The moment I stopped reading the book was when the daemon kills 2 people, and Ellyria and her boyfriend didn't really react. I am having difficult explaining, but it was as if this is the sort of thing that happens all the time. The boyfriend panicked more about the daemon then forgot about everything else.
The relationship between the daemon and Ellyria was something else that was a bit annoying. She would feel bad or comment on all the work the daemon would do and the daemon would respond with something along the lines of, "It's my job to make your life easier." That exchange happens a lot throughout the book.
I don't normally do reviews, but I wanted to post my thoughts just in case the author is reading so that they know what I didn't like about the book. I am pretty sure this book is self published so I just wanted to provide feedback. That being said I didn't hate or dislike the book. Reading is an activity I need to psych myself. I was putting off reading because I was having difficulty psyching myself up to read this book.

I absolutely loved this book! Ellyria is strong and vulnerable, witty and still figuring out who she is and what she wants. Suddenly finding herself bound to Zangrunath, a demon she accidentally summoned, she takes things in stride and they both learn to appreciate the other’s qualities. Their interactions range from sarcastic and biting to playful and witty and even caring and heartfelt, at times. I really felt for Elly and Zane. They were both tossed into an uncomfortable situation and are just working their way through it together, relying on one another. At times I felt I knew what would happen next and was pleasantly surprised by a curveball. The imagery was stellar! The author did a killer job of making the reader feel like they were right there watching Elly and Zane piece everything together and still keep us questioning and wanting more. Sign me up for this whole series because I cannot wait to see how they handle what comes next!
The book starts with a scene that immediately pulls you in and let's you know that these characters are magic instead of normal but because they live in the real world amongst humans they've got to blend in with modern society. The main characters constant bickering and banter is enchanting. It makes you route for them to win at every turn. This one kept me up deep into the night just to find out what happened next.
I was immediately pulled into the story from the first page of the book. The story is captivating, well written and researched, and original. It's exciting to see the two main characters, who are complete opposites, develop a bond through quippy exchanges with eachother while navigating through dangerous encounters with those who want them dead. I am eagerly awaiting this author's second book of the series.
Okie here! I loved that Oklahoma was in this book! I was hooked from the start. I cannot wait to see where this story goes. Ellyria And Zangrunath make such an incredible pairing and it’s insane!!! Cannot wait for book 2!
Great read! I was absorbed in the story from the very beginning. I felt the author not only took her time with this book but molded some amazing characters. I enjoyed everything about the story; well written and I want more! Looking forward to the story continuing on book 2!
