Rate this book
Sequel to Gear Heart in the Gear Heart Series.
The battle isn’t over yet. Aspen, Keagan, Lori, and Thomas flee Currlion with only hopes that the dimies they freed from the battle on Damon's ship made it home safely.
Now in London, they seek refuge with a half-insane old friend, Uncle George, who might just hold the keys to the city. With a city full of mistreated slaves seeking freedom, our trio of heroes rise to the call with the help of new teammates comprised of dimies and humans alike. Temptations and aspirations will threaten the bonds of Keagan, Aspen, and Lori and ultimately cause even deadlier damage.

Will they split up when Lori's head is turned by a free-spirited Gypsy or will they be granted pardon from the Queen to once again walk the streets as innocent people? With Damon holding a lost friend for ransom and their trust in each other stretched to the limit, how will our heroes survive this city of regality and danger?

Soul Cogs, the second installation in the Gear Heart trilogy, follows our beloved characters as they grapple with the events and aftermath of the first book. Soul Cogs tackles meaningful and difficult themes such as heartache, trauma, healing, found family, and the pursuit of what is right despite the risks.

Young did a wonderful job further developing the characters' back stories, complex emotions, and relationships, making me love each of them even more than I did in the first novel.

The ending left me surprised - it was a twist I was not expecting! I cannot wait for the final book in the Gear Heart trilogy!

Sisters Aspen and Lori are on a mission in this alternate reality Victorian steampunk fantasy. Their goal is to free the dimies, slaves from another dimension, and return them home using a device called Gear Heart.

Book one saw the pair challenge the evil Governor Damon and free a large group of dimies. Now they're on the run and seek shelter with the mildly insane, but lovable Uncle George. He became my favorite character in the entire book!

This time the stakes are higher and they must contend with enemies old and new if they're going to help free London's slaves. Queen Victoria herself would seem to oppose their efforts. I applaud Young for inventive world building and engaging character development, though some of the British slang may initially confuse North American readers. Looking forward to book three!

When I first started reading this book, I wanted to give it three stars because I didn’t feel like there was anything going on with the plot or characters arcs. But as the story went on, I began to see more and that made me happy. But at the same time, the reason I gave it a four star was because one, it had way too many typos. But two, I felt like the overall plot was drown out by the characters going about their life’s and for most of it, it felt like their were running away from a ghost. But all and all I did enjoy the story in the end.

This book was slower than the first but had great character development and so much heart! I loved it and I REALLY hope the story continues or the author drops a few other stories involving some of these characters! ⚙️
