Sharing the Stage: Georgie Dupree

Lights! Camera! Action! Georgie Dupree loves the spotlight, but how can she shine on stage if she doesn't get the lead role in the school play? When Georgie Dupree lends an extra hand, she learns that it takes a full crew―stage team, background performers, and special effects―to make the show go on. After an encouraging message from her father, Georgie learns that there are many ways to shine and she steals the show with her creativity. Ceece Kelley and Chloe Guevara are back for the third book in the Georgie Dupree series to show the magic of teamwork and sharing the spotlight.

This book is so cute. I really love the name Georgie Dupree has a nice ring to it. Moral of the story is…there are so many ways you can shine. I couldn’t agree more. I always felt like I wasn’t talented myself before reading this book but this is why I love children’s books they are really uplifting and you can really learn a lot from them. I often feel like I’m not good at anything but if I try and think there’s always going to be something I’m good at. And this is what we need to teach children, it’s so important to understand this teaching. Wonderful book.

In this, the third book featuring the irrepressible Georgie Dupree, Georgie and her classmates are excited about the school play. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Georgie loves the spotlight and dreams of playing the leading role of Alice. Before her audition, Georgie involves her family in helping her rehearse, and when she auditions, she is sure she nails it. But perhaps she overacts, speaks too loudly, and hogs the stage because when the cast list is posted, Georgie is disappointed to receive only a small part. Even though Mr. Parker suggests that she can help out backstage, she worries that she has let her family down. After they reassure her that this is not the case and that there are many ways to shine other than being the star of the show, Georgie decides to help with the stage backdrops. Georgie's experience is surely one that many youngsters and older folks have experienced. It can be hard to be happy for others when they succeed in ways that you had hoped to, but everyone should have the chance to shine in their own special way with their own unique talents. Plus, as Georgie comes to realize, the play or any other large endeavor requires teamwork and support in order to succeed. The backdrops, the costumes, and the music, if there is any, are all part of a successful show. It's good for Georgie to learn to share the stage. Digital--I think--illustrations capture Georgie's vivacious personality and her warm, supportive family who know just what to say to make her feel better.

This is a perfectly delightful and memorable story, one that kids will resonate with as they read the story. Georgie Dupree wants the lead part of Alice (from Alice in Wonderland) in the school play but it turns out she gets a small part, Alice's sister, instead. As she copes with her disappointment, she learns how to contribute and shine in her own unique way to the production. The message is heartwarming but doesn't shy away from the negative emotions. I appreciate all the support and encouragement from the adults in this story as Georgie works through her emotions. The illustrations are rich (featuring a diverse set of characters) and help bring to life the words on the page. The narrative is nice to read aloud and contains slight variations in size and color to help emphasize different parts of the story. Even if children reading this are not familiar with the story of Alice in Wonderland, they will still understand all the parts of the narrative. Beautifully done!
