I like how this is written in that as I read I feel I’m sitting with friends listening to them talk and the words Clem says are sometimes directed at the reader. For instance, here’s Clem’s thought,
“Even though the bite I took was delicious—the icing was so sugary that it had a nice crust on it that paired with the moist sponge beautifully—it was simply impossible to enjoy it as much as I wanted to because, well, you know, MURDER.”
She’s also funny!
Clementine’s dog Lady is very much part of many of these books - I love that! Animals/pets bring a certain kind of friendly element to reads. Lady very much has a personality that is quite loud and quite her own. She’s the type to push forward to get what she wants and doesn’t mind stepping on a few heads to get to the top… but only after she’s bitten the ankles of a few bad people that are after Clem first.
In the previous book, Clem was asked an important question by Rufus and after he assumed she’s answered to his liking, all stress and anxiety was oozing from Clem. The entire book spoke of her struggle within regarding Rufus’s question. She didn’t want to hurt Rufus by confessing to him how she really felt, but ends up breaking his heart anyway.
And let’s not forget about the man in the cabinet! It’s like Narnia’s - Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe. What is the man doing anyway? Why is he in the armoire? How’d he survive for 20 years without food or water?
Well, another cliffhanger by Boyles as the “ending”:
“A plume of grayish smoke rolled to the ceiling, creating a mushroom at the top. Behind it stood the outline of a person—who coughed. A hand waved away the smoke, and a man stepped forward.”
Who is this man, where did he come from, and what does he want?
