In her debut collection, The Whisper, The Storm and The Light in Between, Clara vulnerably reveals her experience as a racialized being surviving Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) and colonization. She describes her work as a “poetic memoir of diasporic despair and delight,” where she speaks to the trauma, healing, and growth that comes with discovering your most authentic self. Every poem takes you on an emotional ride through the struggle of learning who you are and embracing the love you deserve
A wonderfully complex debut. Olivo is at her best, I think, in her longer works, which let her spread out and explore language and ideas, although the short work is also excellent. Looking forward to a long career.
Some poems resonated more than others, but the ones that did caused deep tremors within my own generational trauma as a child of immigrants; and also as a chronic pain sufferer dealing with the platitudes and/or uncaring nature of the American health care system.
This was a short, stunning book of poetry that made me feel seen as a chronically ill author who has struggled with mental health. I adore Clara Olivo and I hope she comes out with another book soon!
